Are you a just a Boss or a Leader?
What traits are associated with being a great leader, who inspires and achieves the best results from their staff and meets the needs of their customers too?
What is it that makes you stand out as a great leader from the rest?
There are many traits of thoughts on leadership and it has generally being found that the most common traits associated with great leaders would include the following:
1. Communication Skills
The ability to communicate with people in their preferred style of receiving information is one of the greatest assets I believe a leader can have. Knowing how to relate to all people, in the style they prefer, whether this be visual, audio or kinaesthetic. It is generally thought that if you are like someone, that person will automatically like you, and if you are not like them, they may not like you. Having said this it is not always about likeness, but how you give and receive communication which gets the results you desire. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a powerful tool to have in anyone’s toolkit, whether a manager, sales person, a great leader, speaker or presenter, this is one tool that is well worth learning.
2. Intelligence and the ability to move your Group Forward.
Great leaders who are smart and action orientated with good judgment skills will be able to make choices that will move their group forward in a positive and decisive manner.
3. Being Able to Accept Responsibility
This means that you accept responsibility for your actions and are at Cause. People who are at effect of others, give reasons why they do not achieve and put the blame on their team. Leaders who accept responsibility are at Cause and therefore these leaders are the ones that get results. It is a strength to accept responsibility and a weakness to blame it on others.
4. Know your teams role and guide them to success.
If you are competent and skilled then you will be able to lead by example.
5. Understand each member of your team, and know how their strategies work.
To be an effective leader one must pay attention to all the team members and genuinely care about helping them to achieve their goals.
6. Great Leaders need People Skills
When you have excellent interpersonal skills you lead effectively and inspire each and every member of your group to be the best they can be.
7. Motivate and Inspire
Motivate and inspire your group and know how to inspire them to be able to motivate others to do their best.
8. A strong need for Achievement
Having a strong leader who has the need to succeed and assist their teams to achieve all their goals shows great strength of character.
9. Have Courage, Perseverance and Resolution
Be positive, brave, committed and stick with it, even when things become difficult and especially when you face significant obstacles. Have the courage and the resolution to see your goals through to the end, overcoming obstacles as you meet them.
10. Trustworthiness
It is essential that all group members are able to depend upon and trust the person who is leading them. So be honest and dependable at all times.
