Technology, Screen Time & Neurodivergent Kids

For many families, managing screen time can feel like an ongoing challenge, particularly when supporting neurodivergent children. Technology can offer valuable opportunities for learning, connection, and enjoyment, but it can also impact routines, emotional regulation, sleep, and social engagement.

In this blog, we take a balanced look at both the benefits and challenges of screen use, with a particular focus on how it affects neurodivergent children. The article explores why screens can be especially engaging for some young people, and how this can make transitions away from devices more difficult.

Importantly, the blog also offers practical, realistic strategies for families. These include setting up predictable routines, supporting smoother transitions, and finding ways to use technology intentionally rather than reactively. The goal is not to eliminate screen time, but to create a healthier and more manageable relationship with it.

🎲 Groups at Spencer Health

Term 2 is now well underway, and our group programs are continuing to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our community.

We are excited to now offer Saturday groups at our Gladesville clinic, providing greater flexibility for families who may find weekday sessions difficult to attend. These groups create opportunities for children and young people to build social confidence, practise communication skills, and connect with peers in a structured and supportive environment.

Our Dungeons and Dragons Social Group has also returned for the term. This program continues to be a favourite for many participants, offering a unique way to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and social interaction skills through shared storytelling and imaginative play.

These sessions provide a relaxed, engaging space where young people can feel comfortable being themselves while building meaningful connections with others.

Digital Wellbeing: Managing Screen Time & Social Media

We are looking forward to hosting an upcoming parent seminar in June, led by Twinkle Garg, focused on supporting families to navigate screen time and social media in a healthy and balanced way.

With technology playing such a significant role in young people’s lives, many parents are seeking guidance on how to set boundaries, support positive habits, and respond to challenges such as overuse, emotional reactions, and online influences.

This seminar will explore practical strategies for managing screen time at home, supporting emotional regulation around devices, and helping children and adolescents develop a more balanced relationship with technology.

It is a great opportunity to gain insights, ask questions, and feel more confident in supporting your child’s digital wellbeing.
