What are Dental X-rays?

According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), Dentists take x-rays to help them in seeing beneath the surface of the teeth and gums. This helps the dentist to detect dental diseases that may not be visible to the naked eye by a visual examination alone.

Dental X-rays are used to detect tooth decay, bone loss due to gum disease, issues from past dental treatments, etc. Some people may be concerned about the safety of this procedure. However, dental x-rays use a very low level of radiation and are safe to have. In fact, the amount of radiation you're exposed to during a dental x-ray is much less than what you're exposed to from other everyday sources.

A set of bitewing x-rays are good for two years!

Book your appointment for a set of X-rays and oral examination with us now through our website: https://www.toothngumdental.com.au/

With winters approaching the days are getting shorter and colder too, which may have you reaching for more cups of tea or coffee than usual but this is not ideal for your teeth! Moderate consumption of these drinks is recommended and always try to have water around to give your mouth a quick wash afterwards.

Q. Should I wait to brush my teeth after I eat something acidic?
A. Yes, in most cases it is best to wait about 30 minutes after drinking or eating something acidic like grapefruit, oranges or lemons so that you don't risk damaging your enamel while it's in a weakened state. You can drink a glass of water afterwards but don't brush straight away.

Q. Should I be using a manual toothbrush or an electric one?

A. Both regular and electric toothbrushes have their own distinct advantages so there's no single way of answering this question, as it varies for individuals' needs. An electric toothbrush is great for those people who suffer from arthritis for example as the brush cleans your teeth with minimal movement from you. It's also useful for setting a timer and some brands of electric toothbrushes even come with pressure sensors and various modes to try.

A regular toothbrush will do a good job too but you must brush correctly (using the appropriate technique for holding and moving the brush) and for long enough (2-3 minutes/twice a day), plus these are generally much less expensive to buy.

And remember, our dentist is here to answer any of your brushing questions during your regular check-up so don't hesitate to ask.
