Updates on oral treatments for COVID-19
Oral antiviral treatments for COVID-19 are now available on the PBS for eligible patients and can be prescribed by your GP. It is important that this medication is started as soon as possible and no later than 5 days after onset of symptoms. It is only suitable for patients if they do not require hospitalisation.
Indications
Access to PBS subsidised prescriptions is available for adults who have mild to moderate COVID-19 confirmed by a PCR or medically verified rapid antigen test and who can start treatment within five days of symptom onset, if they:
• are aged 65 or older, with two other risk factors for severe disease
• are aged 75 or older with one other risk factor
• are aged 50 and older and are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin with two further risk factors for severe disease
• are moderately to severely immunocompromised.
Please make a telehealth appointment as soon as you have your diagnosis if you believe you are eligible and, if suitable, your GP can prescribe medication and reduce your risk of serious disease
(Risk factors for serious disease include such things as diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, respiratory diseases, obesity, immunosuppression, cancer, and others)
