I am deeply saddened and shocked by the horrific events that unfolded at Bondi Beach on Sunday. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence, which targeted a joyful Hanukkah celebration and claimed the lives of innocent people, including children, community leaders, and survivors of past atrocities.

This attack, motivated by hate and extremist ideology, is a stark reminder of the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience in the face of darkness. I stand in solidarity with Sydney’s Jewish community and all Australians who reject antisemitism and violence in any form.

Let us honour the memory of those lost by fostering empathy, supporting one another, and working together to build a safer, more inclusive society. I commend the bravery of first responders and everyday heroes who risked their lives to protect others. We stand with Bondi and all communities touched by this tragedy.

May we choose light over hate, and may love be the loudest voice in our community.

🩷Standing Together Against Gender-Based Violence: Reflections from White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days of Activism

On November 26, Cr Barbara Ward, President of Nutrition NSW, proudly marched alongside the community in support of Ku-ring-gai Council’s participation in the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

This global campaign, running from November 25 to December 10, unites communities to raise awareness and take action to prevent violence against women.

‘16 Days of Activism is a powerful reminder that every one of us has a role to play in ending gender-based violence. By supporting each other and taking small, positive actions, we can create safer, more respectful communities. Let’s stand together—change relies on communities coming together to make a difference.’ Cr Barbara Ward, Nutrition NSW President.

Let’s continue to show up, listen, and learn. Together, we can make a difference.

Cr Barbara Ward, President of Nutrition NSW, strongly supports the NSW Government’s statewide FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) mandate as a vital step for both community health and the environment.

The new legislation requires all councils to provide FOGO services to households by July 2030, with businesses and institutions beginning phased implementation from July 2026. This initiative will divert significant amounts of organic waste from landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating nutrient-rich compost for local agriculture and green spaces.

The mandate also requires large supermarkets to report food donations, ensuring surplus food reaches those in need rather than going to waste. This strengthens efforts to address food insecurity and malnutrition across NSW.

‘Nutrition NSW’s mission is to foster healthy people and a healthy planet. FOGO aligns with our commitment to food security, sustainability, and reducing food waste. By encouraging households and businesses to separate food and garden organics, we promote more mindful food use and support a circular food economy.

We look forward to working with councils, communities, and industry to ensure a smooth rollout. Together, we can build a healthier, more sustainable future—where good nutrition and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.’ Cr Barbara Ward, Nutrition NSW President.

So, have you ever asked yourself - how much coffee is too much? ❓☕🧐

Well, for most adults up to 3–4 cups a day (about 400mg caffeine) is considered safe. More than that can lead to jitters, trouble sleeping, and tummy upsets.

But, everyone’s tolerance is different, so listen to your body and swap in decaf or herbal tea if needed.

Pregnant women, young people, and those sensitive to caffeine should be extra careful, so for more information visit our website for the full quick read!

At Nutrition NSW, we’re passionate about debunking common food safety myths to help prevent foodborne illness. Food poisoning remains a significant issue in Australia, with an estimated 4.67 million cases each year, leading to nearly 48,000 hospitalisations.

This year’s Australian Food Safety Week (8-15 November) we’re supporting the theme is ‘Don’t swallow the myth – food safety myth busting’.

‘Nutrition makes a significant difference in improving the health of Australians, not only for today but for future generations. By understanding and practising safe food handling, we can protect our families and communities from preventable illness.’ Cr Barbara Ward, Nutrition NSW President.

Remember, food contaminated with harmful bacteria may look, smell, and taste normal. Proper storage, preparation, handling, and cooking are essential to keep food safe. If food isn’t stored correctly, bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels.
