How much protein should I be consuming? 🤔

As we age, our bodies require more protein to maintain muscle mass, support metabolism, and promote overall health. The national guidelines recommend 0.6 grams per kilogram each day for women between the ages of 19 and 70. So, if you currently weigh 60 kilos, it would be 60 multiplied by point six, which equals 36 grams a day.

And whilst almost all Australians, including women, meet their nutritional needs for protein (according to the Australian Health Survey), once women reach 50 years of age, the food groups they require change to include more calcium rich foods, which can also be a source of protein.

If you’d like to learn more about how to consume more protein, and how food requirements change over time – reach out!

Did you know approximately 2 million Australians are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes? And while there's currently no cure - you can live a fulfilling life by learning about the condition and managing it well. By adopting healthy lifestyle changes, you can significantly reduce your risk and improve your overall health.

‘Diabetes is one of the most significant health challenges facing Australia today. Over two million people are currently living with both diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes, and alarmingly, another Australian is diagnosed every five minutes. Without substantial investment in prevention, it is projected that by 2050, up to 3.6 million Australians could be living with diabetes. Our programs and services at Nutrition NSW are crucial in preventing this diabetes pandemic, and we urgently call for action and support from the NSW government on this critical issue.’ Cr Barbara Ward, Nutrition NSW President.

For support and guidance on navigating life with diabetes, turn to Nutrition NSW. Our team is dedicated to helping you manage your condition and lead a healthier life.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, but the good news is that it can be prevented and treated successfully if detected early. June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, and at Nutrition NSW, we're committed to spreading the word about the importance of early detection and the role of a healthy diet in preventing this disease.

‘As the President of Nutrition NSW, I want to emphasise the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle in preventing bowel cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is crucial for overall health and can significantly reduce the risk of bowel cancer. In addition to these dietary changes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking is essential. These habits not only support a healthy digestive system but also enhance energy levels, improve mood, and strengthen the immune system. During June let’s shine a light on bowel cancer and the steps we all should take to reduce the risk of bowel cancer and promoting overall well-being.’ Cr Barbara Ward, Nutrition Australia (NSW) President.

Did you know? The Australian Government offers free bowel cancer screening for eligible individuals aged 50-74. Early detection saves lives, so make sure to take advantage of this vital program.
