As promised, here is the first sneak peek at what is involved in a pointe readiness assessment 🩰

THE PENCIL TEST
Why:
~ To get up on your pointe shoes, a certain amount of foot and ankle flexibility is required.
~ The pencil (or in this case pen 😅) test is one way of assessing this flexibility

The test:
~ A pencil is placed on the highest part of the dancer's foot whilst it is pointed.
~ This test is passed if there is space between the pencil and the ankle/shin

If you would like to know more about the tests involved in a pointe readiness assessment, keep your eyes peeled for next week's post!

As promised, here is some information on managing joint hypermobility 🧘🏼‍♀️

Management is highly individualised and often involves a team of health professionals 👩🏻‍⚕️

This is a repost of Dr Linda Bluestien’s, a HSD/hEDS specialist in the USA

~ “Hope for Hypermobility: Part 2-An Integrative Approach to Treating Symptomatic Joint Hypermobility" was just published by Victoria, Daylor BFA (), Cortney Gensemer PhD (), Linda Bluestein MD () and Russell, Norris PhD.

Part 2 discusses a specific approach that one of the authors (L.B.) has integrated into her own medical practice, treating Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders, with great success.

In this post, we'll be breaking down 4 different aspects of the treatment approach so you can better implement these strategies into your own care plan!

🏃‍♀️Movement
📚Education
🧂Nutrition
😴Sleep

We are so grateful to the Ehlers-Danlos Society (.danlos) for funding this important research. Thank you for your dedication to making a difference in this community! ~

Part 2 of management strategies coming soon 🦓
P.S. physiotherapists in USA are called physical therapists

As a lot of you know, I have Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder (HSD)🦓 I struggled a lot with it in my teens, but since my early twenties I have been managing it really well. Last weekend was the first major flare I have had in several years. In classic Physio hypocritical style, I have been booming hard the last few months and finally busted. 10 years ago I would have been really hard on myself about this, but now I know self-compassion is much more effective in getting through

Some things I did to cope
- I clearly did not try brushing my hair, but Blake Lively says this is okay
- drinking hot coffee out of a straw, there was no way my wrists and fingers were picking up a coffee cup
- chose a meal for breakfast that didn’t require me cutting anything up
- wore compression leggings, sneakers and comfortable clothes
- asked for help when I needed help it

What are your strategies for managing a flare?

Welcome to Iluka Physio!

Hi everyone, Steph here.

I have some exciting news from Iluka .
I have made the decision to step back from our beautiful clinic to focus on spending more time with my young family.

Fear not, however! Your health and injury needs will be in very safe hands!

I am so lucky to have found Jamison and Jess to hand over the clinic to.

They believe fully in moving better, and being healthier and stronger for good.
They are invested in long term professional development and education to make sure you are getting the very best, most recent and scientifically backed care.

I are so lucky to have them taking the reigns and continue this beautiful journey I have started.

To the people of Iluka who have supported me for the past 18 months; thank you.
It is a privilege to have worked with you and to have been trusted with your pain, injuries and health.
Our community is special and I am lucky to have experienced it with you.

I look forward to seeing what Jami and Jess bring to the clinic, to see it grow and evolve with them.
