Every story has a beginning, and for Shining Minds Psychology, that beginning is in Hinchinbrook. 💚

When Andy Poll, his wife Amber Po***ck and their young family moved to Ingham in 2019, they didn’t expect to feel so at home so quickly. But this region has a way of doing that. The people, the pace, the sense of looking out for one another ... it didn’t take long to realise this was a place worth putting roots down.

Over time, conversations with locals began to paint a clear picture. Families wanted support close to home. Kids needed someone familiar. Parents wanted care that felt approachable, not clinical. That’s where the idea for Shining Minds began.

Shining Minds Psychology grew from a genuine desire to support this community in a way that feels real. It provides a space where people of all ages can take steps forward at their own pace.

Choosing Ingham wasn’t a business decision. It was a community one.

As we move into a New Year, we want to say thank you. Thank you for the trust, the conversations and for welcoming us into your lives.

Shining Minds is proud to be part of this community and we look forward to continuing the story together.

✨A New Year, A New Adventure ✨

With the calendar’s turn an opportunity presents for us to reflect, reset and embark on our own unique journeys of self-betterment.

Holding to resolutions isn’t always easy. It takes time and patience to develop healthier habits. But, when those habits form the rewards are well and truly worth it.

Looking for a way to stick with your New Year’s objectives? Start with these simple steps:

✍️ Write your goals down and illustrate a clear, actionable path with “milestones” to achieving them. Over time, as you walk this path, these milestones will evolve to become habits - innate, natural and repeatable.

💭 Positive reinforcement - focus on the benefits of your New Year’s resolution. Take 5-10 minutes every morning to journal, meditate or reflect on what you’re trying to achieve.

🎉 Celebrate the successes. Change is challenging and taking a moment to recognise your progress at each milestone plays a pivotal role in developing the neural networks that translate these resolutions into happiness and elation.

🫂 Build your community. You’re not alone in the journey to self-betterment. Connect with your community and those able to support your goals. We rely heavily on our positive relationships and having that extra connection can go a long way towards success.

The New Year presents a wonderful opportunity to rediscover ourselves along with starting fresh in the company of family and friends.

The team at Shining Minds Psychology wants to wish you all a very happy New Year, and even better 2026. 🎊🎊

Our thoughts are with the Jewish and local community, alongside everyone affected by the tragic events at Bondi on Sunday 14th.

In the aftermath of traumatic occurrences, it’s common to experience a wide range of emotional responses. You may feel unsettled, anxious, tearful, numb, or find the constant feed of news from this tragedy wears you down. These reactions are a normal response to abnormal and distressing circumstances.

Trauma can affect people in ways that aren’t always immediate.

If this event has brought up difficult emotions for you, please know that support is available. You do not have to carry it alone.

In small communities, people often pride themselves on looking out for one another. But sometimes, the hardest part isn’t offering support … it’s asking for it. 💬

Communicating our needs openly can feel uncomfortable, especially when it seems like everyone knows everyone. We worry about being a burden, making things inconvenient or “awkward” for others. But, in reality, expressing our needs is one of the strongest methods for protecting the wellbeing of ourselves and the greater community around us.

When we communicate our needs:

We strengthen connection - people can’t support us if they don’t know what’s going on. Sharing honestly helps deepen trust and encourages others to open up too.

We reduce stress and burnout - bottling everything up might feel easier in the moment, but it often leads to overwhelm later. Speaking up early gives our minds a chance to breathe.

We help shape healthier community dynamics - small communities thrive on collaboration. When individuals share their needs, whether it’s asking for more emotional support, extra help, or simply time to rest, it creates a culture where everyone feels safer.

Open communication is an act of care for yourself and for the people who want to show up for you. So this week, try checking in with yourself and ask: What do I really need right now?

And if the answer involves reaching out, take that small, brave step. You might be surprised by how warmly it’s received. 💛

In recent years AI’s introduction across Australia’s classrooms has emerged as a big change, now playing a notable role in shaping how students learn.

While this change has brought with it a number of challenges, there’s also lots of reasons to feel hopeful about what it can offer.

Used thoughtfully, AI can help students feel more supported by providing a tool that streamlines their access to feedback, organisational frameworks and lessons tailored to their individual learning style. For many young people this can ease stress, especially for those struggling to stay engaged.

But there are downsides too. AI relies on student data, which raises real privacy concerns. It can also become something students over depend on, limiting creativity, problem solving and social collaboration which has a flow-on effect to mental wellbeing.

As AI continues to evolve inside our learning settings, it’s therefore incredibly important we focus on making sure it protects wellbeing and works in partnership with the people who guide young minds every day.

The key is balance. AI can be a great tool but it shouldn’t replace the encouragement or guidance students get from teachers, families and peers.

With the right use AI can sit alongside human learning, not in front of it, allowing us to better support our students.

Today is International Men’s Health Day, a chance to recognise the social, physical and mental health challenges that many men and boys face. 💙

Across Australia too many men experience barriers to care for their health, from stigma around speaking up about mental conflicts, to limited access being available for physical check ups in more remote communities.

International Men’s Health Day provides an opportunity to shine a light on these health gaps, giving much needed acknowledgement to the programs working hard to close them.

It’s also a prompt to check in with the men and boys in our own lives. A simple conversation encouraging someone to look at their own wellbeing, or book that long-overdue health appointment, can make all the difference.

Strong communities are built when we look out for one another, with the need to support men’s health being a shared responsibility ... one that helps every part of society thrive.

So, let’s use this day to raise awareness, encourage help-seeking and keep pushing for better health outcomes for men and boys across Australia. 💬

Mindfulness and Self-Appreciation: Learning to Be Kinder to Ourselves 🌿

Mindfulness is often spoken about as a way to manage stress or calm the mind - but its impact goes much deeper, helping us stay present, nurture self-compassion and build self-forgiveness.

When we slow down and notice our thoughts without judgement, we create a space for kindness. This same kindness then flows on, allowing us to be gentler with ourselves and see mistakes as part of being human, rather than signs of failure.

Over time this practice can quiet the inner critic, make room for a healthier and more accepting view of ourselves.

Mindfulness and Self-Appreciation share a powerful connection; one which pushes our growth. Mindfulness lays the foundation, the seeds, from which self-compassion can bloom ... branching out into a wealth of health benefits formed in confidence and a renewed sense of self-worth.

Practising mindfulness doesn’t have to be complex. It can be as simple as taking a few slow breaths, noticing your surroundings, or giving yourself a moment of pause in the day. Each small act of awareness is an act of care and over time, these moments build to help strengthen both your mind and heart.

So be mindful, be kind and be true to your self. 💚

💙 Movember: Starting the Conversation 💙

Every November, we travel back in time with the glorious moustache coming out in full force. But, beyond saying goodbye to the baby faces of Australia, Movember itself is about much more than facial hair.

It’s an incredible movement that shines light on men’s health issues, reminding us how important it is to look after both body and mind.

Across our communities, many men carry quiet pressures. They push through exhaustion, stress, or illness, often without saying a word. But no one should have to do that alone.

Movember encourages us to change the story ... to check in with our mates, make time for health and talk openly about the things weighing men down. Because real strength isn’t in silence; it’s in connection, honesty and care.

So, this Movember, take a moment to reach out.

Ask the men in your life, whether they’re a brother, father, partner or friend, how they’re really doing. Or if you’re the one struggling, know that help is always within reach.

Together, we can make men’s health something that’s truly celebrated.

💸 Easy Wins to Ease Financial Stress 💸

When money feels tight, the pressure can sneak into every part of life. It’s more than numbers ... it’s the stress that sits in your chest, the restless nights and constant thoughts of “how will I make this work?”

The truth is, small steps can help. Start by acknowledging how you feel, not just what’s in the bank. It’s okay to admit that it’s hard. From there, try bringing a little clarity with a simple plan; something that focuses on small, achievable wins rather than big leaps.

Don’t forget to protect your wellbeing too. Go for a walk, eat a proper meal, get some rest. The stronger you feel, the better equipped you are to manage what’s ahead.

And remember, your finances don’t define your worth. Everyone goes through tough patches. Talking about it, whether with a friend, family member, or professional, can make the weight a little lighter.

Small changes, steady steps and a bit of kindness toward yourself can make all the difference. ☀️
