In many families, trauma is unconsciously passed down from generation to generation. Children often carry the unresolved pain of their parents, who in turn inherited burdens from their own parents. This cycle can continue endlessly —unless we make a conscious decision to break it.

Family Constellations therapy offers a powerful, transformative way to end this legacy of inherited pain. Through this unique process, individuals can safely explore deep-rooted patterns within their family system, uncovering hidden sources of suffering. This approach empowers us to release these burdens and allow each generation to move forward with greater freedom.

To truly heal, children must learn to respectfully return the responsibilities that belong to their parents. Only then can they fully step into their own lives, strengthening the bond—without dependence—between parent and child.

Family Constellations highlights the importance of standing as adults, with gratitude for the life we’ve been given, allowing us to fully embrace it and reach our potential.

Our upcoming Family Constellations event in Melbourne is designed to help you explore the dynamics linking past and present through the inner child. By connecting with this vulnerable, authentic part of ourselves, we can:

✨ Respectfully release burdens that aren’t ours to carry
✨ Step out of inherited roles, finding inner freedom and peace to embrace our own lives
✨ Reframe how we relate to our parents and ancestors to create healthier present and future bonds

If you’ve been considering play therapy for your child, our therapists have availability and are eager to help you and your child flourish.

We’re incredibly proud of the Play Therapist team we’ve assembled at The Family Systems Hub. Each member offers an empathetic, nurturing, and safe environment for children, helping them explore and make sense of their emotions, experiences, and relationships whilst the therapist is using co-regulation to support the child’s own regulation.

As parents, it can be challenging not to take it personally when our children lie. We might feel frustrated or tempted to take the moral high ground. But let’s be honest—haven’t we all bent the truth at some point? Whether it was a tiny fib or a bigger lie, there was always a reason behind it, whether conscious or unconscious.

Our amygdala is constantly scanning our environment, labelling experiences as good or bad, positive or negative, supportive or challenging, safe or dangerous. This process, driven by our survival instincts, assigns an emotional charge to our perceptions. If the experience is perceived as positive, the amygdala initiates an impulse to seek pleasure, activating dopamine and oxytocin. Conversely, if the experience is negative, it triggers an instinct to avoid pain, leading to the release of cortisol and adrenaline.

At its core, lying is a strategy used by both children and adults to seek pleasure and avoid pain. When a child lies, they might be trying to escape potential consequences or uncomfortable situations, or they might lie to gain something they want. They may also want to avoid disappointing you or protect themselves from feelings of guilt, shame, or fear. For instance, a child might lie about completing their homework to avoid the discomfort of admitting they didn’t do it, or they might fabricate a story to gain attention or approval from peers. Lying isn’t about being “bad”— it’s a way for them to navigate their emotions and experiences.

Lying can be a coping mechanism—a method for managing their emotional landscape when they feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or threatened.

Instead of reacting with anger or disappointment, try to understand the motive behind the lie. By doing so, you create a safe space where your child feels comfortable being honest, which helps them learn and grow from their experiences.

Self-stimulatory behavior, better known as stimming, is a type of sensation-seeking that can ease feelings of anxiety, frustration, and boredom. Some people find stimming pleasurable and fun. Although stimming is commonly associated with autism, almost everyone stims from time to time. Stimming is especially prevalent among children. Neurotypical people stim for the same reasons that autistic people do—to cope with boredom, alleviate feelings of sensory overload, manage frustration and anxiety, and because stimming can become a pleasurable habit.
