Very interesting food for thought from Slow Food International

In many places around the world choice doesn’t really exist when it comes to healthy food.

Changing how food systems operate as part of an ecosystem is crucial to creating a sustainable future for our planet and ourselves.

Stopping by the beautiful Pink Salt Lake near Dimboola on our way to SA.

Our bone broths have the lowest sodium content on the market as our recipes includes only a small amount of salt.

And it is this local, mineral rich salt that we use.

The lake is managed by Parks Victoria and the salt is sustainably harvested by Mount Zero - Australian Olive Oil, Olives & Produce in collaboration with the local Wotjobaluk community.

We live in a system that often profits from both poor health and its management.

And I think more people are starting to feel that.

Because when you zoom out, the modern food and health landscape is deeply commercialised.

There’s money in:
• ultra-processed food
• cheap filler ingredients
• sugar spikes and blood sugar crashes
• chronic inflammation
• gut dysfunction
• fatigue
• symptom management
• quick-fix pills, powders and products

That doesn’t mean every doctor, medication or health product is bad.

It means the system itself is not exactly designed around helping people become deeply well.

And that’s why health literacy matters.

Understanding ingredients.
Understanding your body.
Understanding stress.
Understanding what supports your physiology and what slowly chips away at it.

Because while you can’t control the whole system…

you can absolutely start paying attention to what you’re participating in.

And that matters.

If you’ve ever stood in front of the protein powder section and thought… “wtf am I actually meant to buy?” — this video is for you.

Because honestly, there are so many options now.

And while they all market themselves slightly differently, there are a few key things I always look at:
- What’s the actual protein source?
- Is it likely to be easy on the gut?
- Does it contain sweeteners, flavours, gums or fillers?
- And is it something I’d actually want to use regularly?

My general take?

👉 Collagen is my preferred option
👉 H**p would be my preferred plant-based option
👉 And I usually go for unflavoured where possible

Because “healthy” doesn’t always mean simple.

Do protein powders confuse you… or have you found one you actually love?

What if all this “wellness noise” isn’t just overwhelming… but also empowering?

We live in a time where we can:
• ask more questions
• seek different opinions
• explore different health approaches
• and take a more active role in our wellbeing

And while that comes with a lot of information to sort through… it also means we have more choice than ever before.

And choice is power.

You don’t need to follow every voice.
You just need to get clearer on what your body needs right now.

Knowing where your food comes from matters.

Because accessibility and supporting local is going to matter more and more due to the global situation we are being faced with.

A lot of products in supermarkets look local or wholesome on the front — but once you flip them over and check the country of origin label, the story can be very different.

A few simple things to start noticing:
• Where was it grown?
• Where was it made?
• What percentage of the ingredients are actually Australian?
• Is that fruit or veg even in season here right now?

You don’t have to do it perfectly.

But the more connected we are to our food, the easier it becomes to make more informed choices.

Farmers markets are one of the easiest places to start.

Eggs, meat, veggies, bread, pantry staples — and often a much clearer connection to where your food actually comes from.

Or many small growers and producers have online ordering options to enable direct purchasing.

A resilient food system is built through everyday choices.

Moments like this remind us how interconnected everything is, and how quickly global shifts can affect something as basic as the food we eat. The longer the supply chain, the more vulnerable it can be.

Supporting local farmers and producers helps keep food closer to home and strengthens our communities.

Real food, real protein — it doesn’t have to be complicated.

One of the easiest ways to support your body is to consistently give it the raw materials it actually needs.

Protein is one of those.

And while we often think of protein as big meals or gym culture… it can also look like simple, nourishing additions throughout the day.

A daily bone broth is one of my favourite ways to do that.

Small shift.
Big support.

That 3pm slump? It’s real — and your body’s way of asking for support, not sugar.

We real crave sugar if our protein intake is not adequate and consistent.

So instead of reaching for something sweet, try this:

🥣 A warm cup of bone broth
🥜 A handful of nuts

This combo provides steady energy, gut support, and balanced blood sugar through the afternoon.

It’s grounding. It’s satisfying. It’s a habit that rewires how you care for yourself during the busiest part of the day.

Small changes, big difference.

Protein intake - it is about so much more than just muscle mass.

Most functional practitioners suggest a daily protein intake of 1g of protein per kg of body weight.

So if you weigh 75kg, you want to be aiming for 75g of protein per day.

What this might look like….

Breakfast:
2 x eggs (poached/scrambled/fried) = 12g
Slice paleo style bread = 4g
Cup of bone broth = 4g
= 20g of protein

Lunch:
100g Tuna or sardines with salad (cucumber, spinach, capsicum, tomato, coriander, avacado)
= 28g of protein

Dinner:
150g serve Chicken curry = 20g
1 cup brown rice = 5g
Served with green beans
= 25g of protein

(Approximate as depends on chicken to sauce ratio and if bone broth is added as a stock it will boost the protein content too)

Add in another cup of bone broth in the afternoon or evening for another boost
= 4g protein

Snack
6-10 nuts (Brazil, walnuts, pistachio)
= 7g protein

So this reflects about 84g of protein for the day….. and is a typical day for me.

Do you think you’re getting enough?
