Posted • A post inspired by a certain podcast last week 😉 To be honest, I'm not surprised that people are confused when it comes to nutrition. The nutrition industry is largely unregulated. The result? Conflicting information everywhere!

This table (briefly) summarises of the scope of practice and regulation of 4 common professions - dietitains, nutritionists, naturopaths and nutrition/health coaches.

What is the difference between dietitians and nutritionists?
〰️Nutr. work in the area of disease prevention.
〰️Diet. work in the area of disease prevention AND treatment. They are trained in Medical Nutrition Therapy which means they can prescribe diets to help treat medical conditions.
〰️Diet. are REGULATED. They have a governing body that holds them responsible for the way they practice.
〰️Nutr. are NOT REGULATED. This means that anyone can call themselves a nutritionist regardless of qualification.
〰️Nutr. can VOLUNTARILY REGISTER their qualification with bodies such as The Nutrition Society of Australia and Australian Natural Therapies Association if they meet the criteria for having completed a Bachelor level degree.

What about Naturopaths?
〰️NOT REGULATED.
〰️VOLUNTARY registration available with bodies such as Australian Naturopathy Practitioners Association.
〰️Naturopathy is a complementary medicine.
〰️Part of their service includes giving dietary and lifestyle advice HOWEVER this does not mean that this advice is evidenced based. This depends on the type of qualification the practitioner has.

Nutrition/Health Coaches?
〰️ No clear definition of scope of practice
〰️ Not regulated

Take home?
〰️ Diet. and Nutr. should be your go-to for evidenced-based nutrition services.
〰️ Naturopathy is a holistic complementary therapy and should be your go-to for herbal supplementation.
〰️ Always check peoples qualification. If seeing a Nutr. or Naturo. ensure they are registered with a professional body as evidence of their training.
〰️ There is good and bad in every bunch 🍇

Re Posted Today is International No Diet Day! 🚫💜Dieting is still the biggest single behavioural risk factor for developing an eating disorder...and it's been proven time and time again that the billion-dollar diet industry robs us of time, money, health and happiness.
Today, we embrace the dismantling of diet culture and everything the diet industry encompasses. We say NO to restriction, NO to deprivation, NO to weight stigma, NO to appearance ideals, NO to low self-esteem and NO to feelings of failure.
Instead, we say YES to freedom, YES to body acceptance and YES to peace with food.
Together, we can all play a part in cancelling diet culture and while at EDV, we think every day should be International No Diet Day, we encourage you to use today as inspiration to spark conversations with your loved ones about the detriments of dieting. 🗣💬

Sometimes we just need to take a step back and assess what’s important in our lives....
The scale doesn’t get to take your energy for one more second, neither does the carb that you ate yesterday, or the judgement of how you moved or did not move your body today.
Obsessing over the number on the scale, the carbs you consume, and the amount of movement you do does not need to be on your list of priorities - things like washing your hands, staying home, and social distancing do! 🧼🏡 🧍‍♀️—— 🧍‍♀️
Whatever is going on in your life right now- give yourself compassion, this is a very different life we are all experiencing and it ain’t easy- so be gentle.💛
