Disabled Surfers Association Bass Coast

Disabled Surfers Association Bass Coast In its 10th year, A volunteer run opportunity for memebers of the disability community to enjoy a day at the beach and catch some waves.

Disabillity Surfing events held at Inverloch and Phillip Island for the Bass Coast and surrounds community. In the 10th year of these events and as part of the other 17 Disability surfing organisations around Australia, we at the Bass coast Disability Surfers Association committee organise about 120 to 200 volunteers per event, that work with all our equipment to help up to 80 members of the disability community come down to the beach for the day to have assistance from volunteers to ride specialised surfboards on some waves in a safe and controlled environment. An event runs for 3 hours and has 6 teams of 15 to 20 volunteers set up along the beach that form corridors in the water so a disability participant can ride waves with whatever assistance they require. Our organisation is completely volunteer run and we supply change tents with motorised beds and hoists to assist disability participants get changed into wetsuits or bathers. We also supply a fleet of beach wheel chairs, that we use to help people access the water that usually require a wheelchair for mobility. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for people with disabilities to have fun, access the beach and have a turn at riding some waves. As we rely solely on volunteer numbers, we make sure all volunteers get lunch, snacks, water and sunscreen to keep them comfy. This is supplied by an onsite BBQ and food prep station. As well as water roles there are many land roles that are available, from helping with food delivery out on the beach to all of the participants and volunteers, to merchandise and administration roles. So if you dont wish to be in the water you can still volunteer to be part of an incredible event for everyone. Pre registration to volunteer or surf through the free online ticket registration links is greatly appreciated as it speeds up the check in process on the day of the event. A full rundown of times can be found in those ticket links too. If you have any more questions please DM the organisations pages and we will do our best to help you out. This public event is covered by Public Liability through the Disabled Surfers Association Australia
