An important aspect, for me, in creating safety within therapy is going at my client's pace. This can be different for each client. Quite often clients will sit on the lounge and look at the creative and expressive space in the room. Some and quite happy to jump in and explore, while others aren't so sure.
For those that aren't sure, it's a gradual process of being curious and making it a sensory experience. This can look like:
💚 talking about what they see in the space
💚 sitting closer to the creative space
💚 touching the various materials
💚 picking up and holding a paintbrush
💚 brushing the dry bristles along their arm, hands, face
💚 using the dry paint brush on the table, paper, canvas etc
The client chooses when they are ready to explore more or move on to something else.
💚 looking through boxes of collage items
💚 tearing/cutting paper or fabric
💚 sitting with a box of shells or other nature items
💚 creating movement with the materials
💚 changing positions - sitting on a chair, sitting on the floor or standing
💚 using a circle punch on random paper/card
💚 listening to music, moving to music
All this helps the client with gentle expression and self regulation to create safety within themselves and in the therapeutic setting.
May this be the supportive, affirming and welcoming space that you need.
