Support work isn’t always about the big outings people see on social media… sometimes it’s the quiet moments, hidden talents, and meaningful connections that make the biggest impact.

At The iCare Group Australia, we believe every participant has something special to offer and this week, Caroline reminded us of exactly that.

Caroline, who is both deaf and blind, has been busy creating these beautiful handmade scarves for our team for winter

Every scarf was made with care, patience, creativity, and so much love behind it. And honestly? We are all completely obsessed with them.

To make the visit even sweeter, Caroline and her amazing support worker Sharyn surprised the team by bringing in a box of donuts too

Moments like this are such an important reminder that capacity building looks different for everyone.

It’s about:
✨ Building confidence.
✨ Encouraging creativity.
✨ Supporting independence.
✨ Creating meaningful purpose.
✨ Celebrating individual strengths and achievements.

These are the moments that truly matter.

A huge thank you to Caroline for sharing your incredible talent, kindness and creativity with us. We feel so lucky to receive something so thoughtful and handmade

And a very special shout out to Sharyn as well!
Thank you for the ongoing support, encouragement and care you show every day. The positive impact you make does not go unnoticed.

This is what meaningful support looks like.

“Why don’t support workers do more exciting things with participants?” 👀

We hear this all the time, especially on social media.

“Why are participants always at parks or shopping centres instead of concerts, events and fun activities?”

The truth is many people don’t realise that unless a participant has a Companion Card, attending events often means paying for TWO tickets if support is required.

That can make big outings financially difficult, especially with the rising cost of living.

At The iCARE Group Australia, we absolutely believe in fun, creativity, community access, and meaningful capacity building activities. We also believe in thinking outside the box and looking at the bigger picture to assist participants with their goals and improve their overall quality of life. 💙

This week our amazing VIC support workers, Jess and Mel, did exactly that.

They connected one of our SIL participants with support from Hastings Community Support Centre and Mornington Community Support Centre, then spent time meal prepping nutritious homemade meals for the week ahead 🍝🥗

And get this…

The participant only spent $35 on groceries for ALL of these meals 🤯

This is the kind of support people don’t always see behind the scenes:
✨ Helping participants stretch their money further.
✨ Reducing financial stress.
✨ Creating independence.
✨ Building community connections.
✨ Supporting participants to work towards their goals.
✨ Making sure participants still have money left for the things they enjoy.

Because support work is not just about “filling time.”
It’s about creating real outcomes and meaningful support.

Huge shout out to Mel and Jess 👏
You both are absolute superstars and we are so proud of the care, initiative and compassion you show every day.

And if you or someone you know is looking for awesome support like this, please reach out.

WE FOUND ELWYN 💛

Last week we shared the beautiful story of Elwyn, an 87 year old local to Ipswich who collects cans so he can fund feeding people experiencing homelessness.

Elwyn collects the cans, shops for the food, cooks the meals, and then personally delivers them on his mobility scooter to people doing it tough, while also providing kindness, conversation and connection to those who need it most.

Today, our CEO Amy had the privilege of meeting Elwyn in person and hearing firsthand about the people he supports within the community. Honestly… it was hard not to feel emotional hearing about the impact he is making. One meal, one conversation, one act of kindness can change someone’s day, year, or even their life.

This story really connected with us because it is such a powerful reminder that no matter our age, health, diagnosis or circumstances, we all have the ability to make a difference in someone’s life.

The iCARE Group Australia gifted Elwyn a $500 Coles voucher to support him in continuing the incredible work he does in our community. It was a small gesture compared to the impact he is making, but one we hope helps him continue supporting others doing it tough.

In a world that can sometimes feel heavy, people like Elwyn remind us that compassion, kindness and humanity still exist in the most genuine way. No recognition. No expectations. Just a good human helping others because he cares.

A special thank you to 7NEWS Brisbane for sharing Elwyn’s story and helping us connect with such an incredible human. 💛

Thank you, Elwyn, for your continued work in the community. Ipswich is lucky to have you! 💛

Annie + Firefighters = DREAM COME TRUE

If you’ve ever supported Annie before… you already know!
firefighter calendars ✔️
firefighter posters ✔️
slight obsession ✔️

So, when our support worker Keira realised she actually knew the firefighters from the calendar… we knew this had the potential to get VERY exciting

Fast forward to today…

Annie thought she was just heading out like normal…
NOPE!

Surpriseeeee Annie!
Private visit to the warehouse with the firefighters themselves

Not only did she meet them, they had signed calendars and posters ready just for her (we’re not crying, you are)

Safe to say… Annie was living her absolute best life today.

Huge shoutout to the legends Australian Firefighters Calendar who made Annie’s day so special, you’ve definitely got a lifelong fan now

This is what we love… turning everyday moments into something unforgettable

Why do our monthly BBQs matter so much?

This is something we don’t always talk about… but the impact goes far beyond just a sausage and a chat.

For many of our participants, events like this are about:
👉 Building confidence in social settings
👉 Creating routine and consistency
👉 Feeling part of a community
👉 Developing communication and connection skills

And sometimes… it’s about something even more special.

We have a participant, Caroline, who is deaf and blind and without fail, she shows up to every single one of our monthly BBQs.

But it’s not just that she comes… it’s the way she arrives.
Excited. Engaged. Ready to be part of it all.

Since coming on board with us in 2023, Caroline has come such a long way and a huge part of that journey has been the incredible support of her Support Worker, Sharyn.

Sharyn has been there from the very beginning. The consistency, the trust, the understanding between them… you can see it in every moment.

Because of that support, Caroline is more confident, more connected, and more involved in her community. And seeing her light up at each BBQ is something we all look forward to.

💙 This is what support looks like.
💙 This is what inclusion looks like.

It’s not always about big programs, sometimes it’s about showing up, feeling safe, and being part of something.

If you’re looking for ways to build confidence, connection and community within your supports, reach out. We’re always here to help guide you.
