Ever heard of periodontitis? It's one reason it's so important to brush and floss. 🪥 🦷

Periodontitis is a severe gum disease that weakens the gum closest to your teeth.

Gum disease occurs when the tissue supporting the teeth (your gums) becomes infected. The disease starts as mild gum inflammation (gingivitis), which can be fixed through good oral hygiene practices. But, if untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. 🫣

Periodontitis can become more severe over time. As it progresses, it can affect the bones supporting your teeth, loosening them and even causing tooth loss (yikes!).

The best way to prevent gum disease is to brush your teeth and gums twice a day and floss daily. It's important to do this, even if your gums are bleeding. 🪥

Are you an oral-hygiene rockstar who brushes twice a day, flosses and visits their dentist regularly, but still aren't feeling fresh? 🤨

You may be forgetting to clean your tongue! 👅

Your tongue is covered in little bumps called papillae that allow you to taste and feel. It also harbours bacteria that can cause bad breath, tooth decay and gum infections.

To prevent this, try brushing your tongue gently from back to front a few times. Using a tongue scraper tool is even better at removing plaque and bacteria off the tongue surface.

Start cleaning your tongue regularly to reap these benefits:
👉 Improved taste
👉 Fresher breath
👉 Improved overall health

If your tongue is discoloured, white, black or red, sore or experiencing persistent pain - visit your dentist as it could be something serious.

Gum disease occurs when tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth (your gums) becomes infected. 🩸🦷

The infection of the gum is caused by plaque, which is bacteria that forms on teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease:
💢 Gingivitis — a mild form which occurs when gums become red and swollen. Gums may bleed easily when they're brushed and cause bad breath.
💢 Periodontitis — a severe form which occurs when gums become weak, creating gaps for germs to get trapped. This leads to increased swelling and over time your teeth may become loose or fall out.

You've probably already guessed it, but the best way to prevent gum disease is to brush your teeth and gums twice a day, and floss once a day. It's important to do this, even if your gums are bleeding. 🪥

If you think you may have gum disease, it's best to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Gingivitis can be cured without permanent damage, but periodontitis can't be cured, only controlled.

Let's talk about halitosis, commonly known as bad breath. 🤢

The most common cause of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. This stems from tiny food particles being trapped in your teeth and mouth. When these particles break down they let off a smelly gas which causes bad breath.

If you're looking for ways to minimise bad breath, we've got some steps to help you. 👇

Please see your doctor, dentist or chemist if your bad breath doesn’t go away or you're concerned.

Do you have a set of perfectly white chompers? 🦷

Having a perfect smile doesn't mean your oral hygiene is up to scratch. On the flipside, crooked or yellow teeth doesn't necessarily equal an unhealthy mouth.

Keep your teeth and gums healthy by:
🦷 Flossing once a day before brushing
🪥 Brushing twice daily - spit instead of rinsing after brushing
🧃 Reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume
🚰 Drinking plenty of tap water

No matter what your teeth look like, it's impossible to tell how healthy your mouth is, unless you visit your dentist. 😁👍
