Amazing correlations in what I see everyday and sometimes struggle to explain why you breakdown with the most simple things.

“Coach, why am I always dealing with something? A sore ankle, tight calves, my back acting up. I train smart… or at least I try to.”

Coach Davis didn’t respond right away. He looked at Maya, one of his most promising athletes, and pointed to the grass beside the track.

“Sit.”

Maya sat, confused.

Coach crouched down beside her. “Tell me about your training week.”

Maya began listing off her runs intervals on Tuesday, tempo on Thursday, long run Sunday. “And I rest on Mondays and Fridays,” she added proudly.

“Sounds solid,” Coach nodded. “Now, what do you do outside of running?”

Maya shrugged. “You know… work, sleep, Netflix.”

“No strength work? No mobility drills? No foam rolling? Stability exercises?”

She hesitated. “Sometimes… when something starts hurting.”

Coach sighed. “That’s like fixing the roof after it starts raining.”

He picked up a stick from the ground and snapped it. “Running puts a lot of force through your body seven, eight times your bodyweight every step. If your body isn’t ready to handle that, it breaks. Not all at once. Bit by bit. A tight hip here, a weak glute there. Compensations build up, and then boom… injury.”

“But I stretch!” she protested.

“Stretching isn’t enough,” Coach said. “It’s about building resilience. Strong core. Mobile joints. Stable ankles. If you neglect the foundation, the structure collapses.”

Maya was quiet for a moment.

“So… the best runners?”

“They train to run and train to support their running. Strength, mobility, nutrition, sleep. It’s all part of the program. Running isn’t just about moving forward. It’s about building a body that can handle moving forward. Again, and again, and again.”

Maya nodded slowly. “Alright. Where do I start?”

Coach smiled. “Tomorrow. Gym. I’ll show you how to train like a runner who wants to stay running.”

Are you or someone you know suffering from ...
*Lower back pain
*Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs
*Increasing difficulty walking
*Relief when sitting or bending forward

You might be suffering Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS).

This is a condition in population's generally over 50yo.
Were the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal nerve and vascular system.

In recent years, a couple of randomized controlled trials have shown that surgery is not always necessary, and that Boot Camps (specific structures exercise programs) can help reduce the need for surgery or delay surgery, in mild to moderate cases.

Chiropractic Boot Camp Programs can help you reduce pain, increase walking distance, generally move better, feel stronger, and stay active.

The boot camp involves ...
✔ Gentle Core & Postural Strengthening
✔ Targeted Flexibility & Mobility Exercises
✔ Safe, Low-Impact Conditioning to Improve Walking
✔ Hands-on Therapy & Movement Coaching

Do you measure up?

The World Health Organization (WHO) regularly reviews its guidelines on exercise recommendations for different age groups.

1. Adults (18–64 years)
• At least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week.
• Muscle-strengthening activities involving major muscle groups at least twice a week.
• Reduce sedentary behavior; replacing sitting time with movement is beneficial.

2. Older Adults (65+ years)
• Same recommendations as adults, with an additional emphasis on balance and strength training at least three times per week to prevent falls.

3. Children & Adolescents (5–17 years)
• At least 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
• Activities should include muscle- and bone-strengthening exercises at least three times per week.

General rules...
- any movement is better than none.
- the best movement for you is the one you will do/enjoy.

The WHO defines moderate-intensity aerobic activity as physical activity that increases heart rate and breathing while still allowing a person to hold a conversation.

It is typically measured as:
• Heart Rate: 50–70% of maximum heart rate.
• Perceived Effort: Feels somewhat hard but sustainable.
• Talk Test: You can talk but not sing during the activity.

Examples of Moderate-Intensity Activities:
• Brisk walking (5–6 km/h)
• Cycling at a comfortable pace (16–20 km/h)
• Swimming at a leisurely pace
• Dancing (e.g., ballroom or social dancing)
• Gardening (raking leaves, pushing a lawnmower)
• Water aerobics
• Household chores (vacuuming, mopping)

Can you tell my teen they are too young to be going to the gym?

This is something that I get asked in the clinic from time to time.

There really is no problem with a teen attending the gym and lifting weights. If they get advice on appropriate loads and types of training there are major benefits to self-esteem, weight management, mental health, cardiovascular fitness, stronger bones for life, reduced injury risk in their other sports... and the list goes on.

I, like many parents of teens, complain about technology and our kids addiction to devices. Surely going to the gym and pushing weights has got to be better than sitting around, with poor posture, on a device!

About us....

The Clinic was founded in March 1958 by Dr. Len Walters and his wife Elizabeth Walters at 72 Mount Street, Heidelberg.

Len followed in the footsteps of a small group of pioneering Chiropractors trained in the US and practicing in scattered locations around the cities of Australia. In the 1950’s there were no training facilities for chiropractors in Australia, so Len headed to Davenport, Iowa to train at the founding school for chiropractors; Palmer School of Chiropractic.

Len can be thanked for a part in the development of Chiropractic in Australia. He trained a group of chiropractors to help him in his busy practice, when there was no training in Australia, was involved in the registration process for chiropractors in the 1970’s, and was involved in the early phases of the chiropractic association.

In March 1984 the practice moved to its current location at 94 Lower Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe. Len and Elizabeth battled through treating patients while renovating the building and fighting council for permits. They continued to provide exceptional community service, while helping many new graduates forge their path into the professional and battle their own health demons.
