Children who come to play therapy often struggle with low self-esteem, low self-worth, and a lack of self-confidence.
This can be as a result of views or actions of others they have internalised.

Bowlby (1988) defined the Internal Working Model (IWM) as our way of understanding relationships and is based on our relationship with our primary attachment figure.

If these experiences have been negative or inconsistent, this can affect a child's own sense of self.

As adults, we need to be mindful that children are listening to how we talk to them and may not perceive what is said how we think they will. This also applies to our actions towards them.

Talking about them in a positive light even when they're struggling can be hard, but it is imperative that we try to, to ensure they think positively about themselves.
