When I work with families and newly diagnosed neurodivergent people one of the common themes that comes up is around food.
For so long I’ve heard people talk about their children being fussy or picky eaters, but what if we changed that narrative and thought about it as cautious eaters.
Fresh fruit and vegetables can have so many variables.
Sometimes it’s soft, sometimes hard, sometimes sweet, sometimes sour.
In a chaotic inner world it can be the final straw that tips the person into a melt down.
Consistency and predictability equals safety and happiness in a neurodivergent world. Our safe foods can give us that.
Having to make too many decisions can also create stress and anxiety. So limiting choices around food, clothes, activities, events makes perfect sense.
Let’s change the narrative around these things and give yourself or your kids a break - you’re not fussy, choosy, difficult , annoying, high maintenance or any of those other words you’ve likely heard or thought. You’re just doing the best you can with the personal resources you have.
If you’d like to explore any of these ideas further I’ve got a couple of places coming up in my schedule so just let me know I’d love to hear from you.
Be kind to yourself
