Interesting article about Hypermobility Syndrome (which is often really undiagnosed Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) - this is exactly spot on as to why I personally don't choose to teach super bendy asana in class despite being able to acheive the shapes in my body personally.. It's also why I'm the first to fuss over keeping wrists aligned over shoulders and knees over ankles.. I feel the benifits in yoga come much more from the breath, the simple stability building and the re-balancing postures than flexibility so I much prefer to focus on those aspects. That said, there is nothing wrong with advanced postures when done saftley, and they can be very rewarding and enjoyable when worked towards mindfully.. I just think flexibility is a bit over-rated and STABILITY needs to have it's time to shine in the yoga world too :) Balance after all is the real goal.
Could your flexibility be the result of hypermobility?
