We were delighted to see Dr Anitha Karunairajah, McGrath Foundation cancer care nurse Sam Williams, and clinical nurse Taleesa Griggs featured in a PerthNow story on expanding breast cancer care services at JHC.

Breast cancer patients are now offered a more holistic, comprehensive and continuous level of care here at JHC. Patient Lorraine Cross said having access to a single medical and support team based locally made a world of difference to her, and we are grateful she shared her story.

The Kids Research Institute was proud to feature on last night’s episode of Four Corners featuring ORIGINS Co-Director, Professor Desiree Silva.

Presented by Dr Norman Swan, the episode investigated the rise in early onset adult cancers, and the crucial role that longitudinal studies like ORIGINS play in uncovering how early life environments may shape lifelong health outcomes.

ORIGINS, a collaboration between The Kids and Joondalup Health Campus, is collecting longitudinal data and biological samples from 10,000 WA children and families from conception into early childhood, providing a rich platform for researchers investigating the impact of the early environment on the development of chronic diseases.

Today Joondalup Health Campus’ (JHC) new 106-bed public ward block and expanded theatre and procedural complex were officially opened by the Minister for Health; Mental Health the Hon. Meredith Hammat MLA , and the Minister for Health Infrastructure the Hon. John Carey MLA.

The pair unveiled an official opening plaque with Ramsay Health Care Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer Natalie Davis and toured the new facilities, along with the Member for Joondalup Emily Hamilton MLA and other guests.

The expanded theatre and procedural complex includes one new theatre to increase our surgical capacity and two new interventional catheterisation laboratories (cath labs) to replace our existing cath lab, which will enable us to double the number of lifesaving and life-extending image guided cardiac and vascular procedures we perform to around 3,000 per year.

The opening marks another major milestone in the $307.9 million expansion of JHC funded by the State and Australian Governments to provide local residents with new facilities that will make a monumental difference to them and the overall WA health system.

Joondalup Health Campus is extremely proud that its 102-bed Mental Health Unit (MHU) has beaten competing projects from across the globe to claim a top prize at the 2025 Design in Mental Health Awards in Manchester.

The facility, which opened in 2023 as part of the $307.9 million expansion of Joondalup Health Campus funded by the State and Australian Governments, was named Project of the Year- New Build International.

Designed by Silver Thomas Hanley architects, in conjunction with Ramsay Health Care and in consultation with consumers and the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist, the multi-million dollar MHU was recognised for the complexity of its design on a constrained site to accommodate diverse cohorts of inpatients, including youth (16-24 years), adults (25-64 years), and older adults (65 years+), and those requiring psychiatric intensive care.

Today is International Day of Play with the theme: “Choose play – every day!”

At JHC, we are extremely proud of our ORIGINS research project, spearheaded by our Director of Research Professor Desiree Silva (pictured) and delivered in collaboration with The Kids Research Institute Australia, which is the largest study of its kind in Australia, following 10,000 children, from their time in the womb, over a decade to improve child and adult health.

Among ORIGINS’ preliminary research is the finding that in a group of over 900 three-year-olds, 47% experienced a rapid and intense change in emotions or mood, inappropriate to the setting and 35% experienced anxiety.

In response to this and other alarming trends in poor early childhood mental health, ORIGINS partnered with Nature Play WA to pilot the Nature Play in the Park program - a family–based healthy lifestyle intervention program to promote emotional and mental wellbeing, healthy eating, physical activity, and connectedness to community for three- and four-year-olds.

Nature Play in the Park has now been rolled out across seven local government areas with more than 500 Perth families taking part, with the program showing very promising results in reducing kids’ anxiety, increasing their resilience and aiding in their sleep.

Once again, our ED team got behind Crazy Socks 4 Docs. The annual awareness event helps to break down the stigma around mental health in doctors.

Staff from a range of disciplines pulled on a colourful and outrageous display of socks in a show of support for doctors who, just like anyone else, can go through dark times.

This World Environment Day we celebrate JHC’s recycling achievements with 44 percent of recyclable materials at the hospital being diverted from landfill, and rising.

In 2022, Ramsay Health Care (RHC) announced its worldwide pledge to attain Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and recycling efforts are among the range of strategies underway to achieve that. In March 2025, RHC officially met its target of eliminating 100 million single-use plastic items.

JHC’s EnviroServices team is committed to the ongoing education of staff to support them to recycle as much as they can in the workplace and at home.

At Ramsay, we know that looking after people means looking after the environment they live in.

Through Ramsay Cares, our sustainability strategy, we’re making practical, long-term changes – from reducing emissions and cutting waste to building more energy-efficient hospitals.

Every action counts, and it’s the everyday choices made by our people that are helping shape a healthier future for both patients and the planet. 💚🌏
