I attended a special Alumni Curtin event yesterday on the International day of Stuttering Awareness to celebrate 50 years of Speech Pathology and 40 years of the Curtin Stuttering treatment clinic! This clinic in the Health sciences Building 404, treats children, adults and people with disabilities and is run by Senior Speech Pathologist, Kathy Viljoen.

It was a night of funny and inspiring speeches, music, refreshments and canapés. I recollected fond memories of working in this clinic as a student and learning so much in general in those forming years on campus. I was thankful and inspired to see so many previous lecturers and supervisors, still passionately committed to supporting growth and development in the field.

My colleagues and I at Viva Speech Pathology are excited to assist more students in the future and to learn about the new directions and research our dynamic field. The Curtin campus is looking fantastic and has such an apt motto from John Curtin himself, “Look, ever forward”.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed my 🗣️Lidcombe stuttering therapy session 🗣️ today with a boy in pre-primary at our new Yokine clinic. I have sent the family the graph to rate the child’s fluency level, the Lidcombe parent website and our new updated Viva SP handout to use this program in the initial states at home.

Contact us to make an appointment (9301 4128) with our therapists who treat stuttering. It is a highly effective Australian program (researched since 1980’s) by the Australian stuttering research centre. I also use a version of it “Time out therapy” based on the same evidenced based principles for teenagers and adults.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is the most prevalent childhood communication difficulty, impacting a child's primary language development. It has a profound effect on the lives of over 40,000 children and their families in Western Australia.

Parliament Fountains will be lit purple this evening to support the awareness of this permanent disability. The 2025 DLD Awareness Day theme is ‘You can’t see DLD’.

This is a terrific book for 2 to 6 year olds! It is excellent for a fun guessing game every few pages. I liked the surprise ending, and would use it to expose children to the essential pre-literacy skill of rhyming.
