In the wake of the Sydney attack on Jewish families celebrating the start of Hannukah, I reflected how much fear and 'us:them' mentality comes from not understanding, not accepting, and depersonalising people, cultures & religions we don't understand. I share my understanding of Hannukah because many people I have spoken to are not familiar with what it is. Neither was I. So I decided to be more informed. Events like Sydney tell us that we need to learn more, to understand, to celebrate differences, to condemn violence in our modern world, and to see everyone as human, as mother, father, daughter, son, sister, brother, friend, employer, employee... a person with a story, with family, with hopes and dreams and differences. Different can be uncomfortable but acceptance is beautiful and we need more beautiful acts in our world. Post written by Jennifer Fleming. I welcome corrections to any inaccuracies in the images.
