Hi, My name is Andrew - “Andy”. I am 41 years old and am from Kadina, South Australia. I have been a Nurse/Support Worker for the past 20 years, and have worked in various locations across South Australia.
Outside of work, I am passionate about AFL football - I am a dedicated Adelaide Crows supporter and keenly follow all Tennis in the summer months. I enjoy travelling and exploring the great outdoors of Australia, watching old classics like The Golden Girls and being a part of my local community Poultry club and shows - recently having won champion waterfowl and bantam titles. I am a lover of animals and own two loyal cats “Mango” and “Susie”.
Being a support worker, I value assisting each clients requests based on their individual needs, whilst having fun at the same time. Support workers play a vital role in the lives of people living with physical, psychosocial, neurological, developmental or intellectual disabilities, or those suffering from chronic disease. Providing physical and emotional support, they enable people to live their lives in the most independent way possible. Doing so requires a unique combination of skills, experience, and training.
I am compassionate, approachable, friendly and patient. I will always strive to put the needs of my clients first and foremost. I am a hard worker, extremely time efficient and reliable.
What are the responsibilities of a support worker?
There are many roles and responsibilities of a support worker, including:
* Providing physical support which may include helping with household tasks and personal care.
* Providing emotional support for an individual and their families.
* Supporting and helping with health care needs, including routine checks or administrating medication.
* Encouraging and supporting the development of personal skills through hobbies and interests.
* Teaching life skills, such as shopping, using public transport and paying for bills.
* Working with other healthcare professionals to ensure that all care needs meet the highest possible standards.
Support workers also help the people they support to form meaningful connections. This could be by aiding them in their hobbies and interests, connecting them with suitable community groups, enabling them to attend college or encouraging them to develop a new life skill such as cooking or money management. To achieve this, understanding how the person communicates and their likes and dislikes is an important part of the job.
