Period pain is no joke 🥵

I'll always start with simple minerals and nutrients, and often the simplest approach gives relief! And always alongside dietary/lifestyleinterventions like staying active, reducing inflammatory foods and focussing on those beautiful antioxidant-rich foods within the diet: think green tea, berries, leafy greens, oily fish, apples and turmeric and ginger. My fave remedy is 1/2 tsp of ginger powder in boiling water! 🫚

If you're getting nausea, loose bowels, dizziness and cramping with your period, think excess prostaglandins as a likely culprit. If your periods are also exceedingly heavy, your oestrogen detox pathways may need extra support, and progesterone may need bumping up ⚖️

If simple treatments don't bring relief then we need to delve deeper to find out why ❤️

Inositol has been a real game changer in my clinic for reducing thyroid antibodies. Following the latest research guidelines for inositol dosing, I’m seeing incredible shifts at doses of just 600mg/day alongside selenium! For reference, I usually dose at 4g daily for insulin resistance so 600mg is a small but mighty dose 💪

Inositol also improves TSH receptor sensitivity; think of it as the 'amplifier', ensuring the thyroid is truly listening to that TSH signal. Apart from calming the autoimmune response within the thyroid, inositol helps to bring an elevated TSH back to within a normal range - and remember, the ideal TSH range is 1-2, not 0.5-4 like most reference ranges on your blood results! 🧐

If you're told you will always have high antibodies because you have Hashimotos, seek a second opinion - antibodies can be shifted, it simply takes a multi-faceted approach 🌼

Not all probiotics are created equal! 🧐 There are a LOT of colourful products available (how overwhelming is Chemist Warehouse) and not all will be suited to your needs.

If your gut feels worse on them, take a beat; any change to the gut microbiome can cause temporary bloating or gas (this should settle rather quickly), but if you find these symptoms lingering, stop taking them and seek professional advice.

Some strains can trigger histamine production (not ideal for those with allergies or histamine intolerance!). If you find you react to most probiotics, it's time to consider SIBO testing.

The key is to choose the right strain for your health needs. Its best to chat to a health pro to help you decide, but these are some common, evidence-based probiotic strains I use in my clinic every day, with some being available retail through your local chemist 💊

Cholesterol - friend or foe? 🧐

I see a lot of clients being told they have high cholesterol without being given direction on how to reduce or manage their levels.

We need cholesterol for hormone production, brain function, and healthy cells...but the type of fat you eat is crucial:
●Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, fatty fish) help boost HDL (the 'good' cholesterol) and protect your heart.
●Trans fats and excess saturated fats (fried food, packaged baked foods, processed meats) raise LDL (the 'bad' cholesterol), contributing to plaque buildup and cardiovascular risk.

So, not all fat is the devil! High cholesterol alone is also not a great indicator of heart health; a more effective way to determine heart disease risk is via a coronary artery calcium score.

I always start with 2x tblsp ground flaxseed for clients with high cholesterol. Cholesterol lowering + gut loving properties rolled into one 🤸‍♀️

Happy shopping! 🌞

A heartfelt hello to all the new kids following along! It's so great to have you here 🌼
It's about time I reintroduced myself... ready for some fun facts?

1. I drink herbal tea like it's a competitive sport. I love caffeine but sadly, she does not love me back 😔
2. I LOVE a good dance floor. If there's music, I'm moving. You're welcome for the free show.
3. I once got chased by an emu when working at a native animal hospital, and it's up there as one of the scariest moments in my life (and I've seen all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies)
4. I really hate the sound of hearing people chew, like really hate it... its actually a condition called misophonia and according to my gene report I'm genetically inclined to have it haha!
5. I hate dishonesty. Its actually the worst. And fakeness in general. Ugh!
6. I spend a lot of time thinking about food. I love it! My husband and I have a saying...'dessert happens', because... it has to, every time. Eating is definitely my cardio.
7. I'm a daughter of a twin, who's also a sister to two other sets of twins. Its actually a miracle I didn't have twins!
8. I've spent the last 8 years wading through the ins and outs of a balance disorder. Its been both one of the biggest challenges and perhaps one of the biggest gifts life threw at me, as it taught me a lot about chronic illness, being in the moment and advocating for yourself, and I know it's made me a better practitioner!
9. I love The Beatles. I flew over to Sydney see Paul McCartney play a few years ago and it was definitely a bucket list moment!
10. My toxic trait is trying clothes on in store, making the sales assistant think they didn't fit me, then going home and finding it cheaper online. Sorry not sorry, what is life without a good bargain? 🤸‍♀️

Thx for sticking round! And may you never get chased by an emu😭❤️

Vitamin D isn’t just about how much you take — it’s about how your body ACTIVATES and USES it! 🌞

Vitamin D usage within the body relies on two key players:
1️⃣ Conversion factors, within the liver and kidneys
2️⃣ Vitamin D Receptors — the “locks” that vitamin D binds to in order to do its job.

Things like inflammation, genetics, or nutrient deficiencies can disrupt both conversion and receptor function — which means just taking vitamin D just doesn't cut the mustard.

I will often see chronic vitamin D deficiency in inflammatory conditions such as Hashimotos and endometriosis. It's always one of the first things I check with new clients as it can really impact mood and energy. And no, levels of 55 are not 'normal'! Aim for around 100. Don't forget, form matters - my favourite is calcifediol, which gets levels up fast 🌞

Why do we need to eat different coloured plant foods? 🌈

Aside from the prettiness factor, every colour has a different health effect within the body!
🔴 has lycopene for prostate health (esp when cooked in olive oil) and heart health
🟢 has chlorophyll and lutein for eye, skin and liver health
🔵&🟣 have anthocyanins for healthy aging and brain health
🟠&🟡 have beta carotene for eye and immune health
⚪️ has quercetin and allicin for immune and anti cancer effects (yes, white is considered part of the eating rainbow)

Above all, different colours feed different gut bacteria which has follow on effects for mood, gut health and reducing inflammation. Even variations within the same vegetable can yield different health effects i.e. green capsicum vs red vs yellow capsicum. Each of these counts as a different plant food.

💫Here's your challenge: can you eat 30 or more different plant foods in a week?

Pictured above some severely stunted heirloom carrots that refused to grow in my garden (it was them, not me 💁‍♀️)

All my eczema & dry skin sufferers, this one's for you! It's the season for it 🥶

Winter can be prime time for skin issues due to the constant indoor heating and steamy hot showers drying skin out. Cue itchy, flaky, irritated skin... and for severe eczema sufferers, that can mean the door is open to infection if the skin barrier remains in disrepair.

While there are some fabulous probiotics and other supplements out there to help treat eczema and dermatitis, the basics of maintaining skin barrier function are crucial.

Don't hate me, but that includes scrapping those long, hot showers🫠

Emails like this are what I do this for. I want each client to feel seen and heard, like their problems matter, and that help is available. I've been dismissed by many medical practitioners from GPs to specialists to allied health professionals, and it sucks. I now have a fantastic GP who listens and advocates for me. Great healthcare exists, you just need to find it!

Your symptoms aren't all in your head. It's not all your fault. You're worth investigating and following up. If you don't feel like you have your health team on your side, it's time to change 🫶
