๐ŸคThank you to everyone who came out and visited our โ€˜Go Rural!โ€™ stall at Curtin Open Day yesterday. We got to connect with many prospective health science students and their families, and really appreciated the support of our additional volunteers, Holly and Alanna - former OT students who completed placements in the Goldfields through our UDRH and are now working in the region.

They had plenty of meaningful conversations with future students and were able to share their firsthand experiences of studying, training and now working in the Goldfields.

๐Ÿš™ Our team recently completed a full-day 4WD driver training session with Riklan Emergency Management Services, building the skills and confidence required to safely access remote areas across the Goldfields. This training is essential for our team, who regularly travel across the region into our Northern Goldfields communities and south to Norseman and Esperance.

The hands-on training covered key practical skills and safety knowledge - from understanding different 4WD systems and preparing vehicles for remote travel, to changing tyres, completing pre-start checks and planning journeys. Staff also practiced navigating challenging terrain, emergency braking, along with recovery techniques.

๐Ÿ‘ Thanks to Riklan for delivering such a practical and valuable session that helps keep our team safe on the road.

๐Ÿค•๐ŸฉบThe GUDRH recently delivered a three-day Interprofessional Simulation event at Curtin University's Rural Health Campus in Kalgoorlie, reinforcing the value of interprofessional collaborative practice by supporting students to build the practical teamwork skills required to drive strong patient outcomes in rural healthcare.

Following a two-day National Health Education and Training in Simulation (NHETS) workshop for Curtin University and WA Country Health Service (WACHS) staff, the third day brought together 26 students from Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and Social Work. Together they utilised our purposeโ€‘built Sim Room, where they worked through 7 scenarios spanning 4 Emergency Department settings and 3 outpatient situations ๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿฉน

๐Ÿฉบ A group of GUDRH nursing students recently joined the 'Rethinking Hepatitis B Care in Regional and Rural Areas' event hosted by Goldfields Health Professionals Network. Beyond the session itself, our students were able to connect one-on-one with the presenting nurse practitioner, gaining valuable insights into training pathways and nursing specialities.

๐Ÿงก It's wonderful to see our students embracing these opportunities and maximising the education sessions on offer in the Goldfields.

๐Ÿฆบโ›๏ธ What an incredible experience for our GUDRH students!! Last weekend they attended The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia - CMEWA (CME) 2026 Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition, hosted at Hannans North Tourist Mine.

With over 16 teams from around WA competing across 8 simulated events including vehicle extrication, firefighting, first aid, rope rescue, and incident management - it was a front row seat to some of the best mine emergency response in action.

This is what immersive, community experiences look like for our students. Getting out, getting involved, and discovering the industries, people, and skills that make the Goldfields so unique. Fantastic to see our students embracing the different opportunities our region has to offer. ๐ŸŒŸ

We were honoured to welcome His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs Dawson to the Goldfields University Department of Rural Health during their visit to Curtin University's Kalgoorlie campus.

They toured our simulation room and expressed genuine interest in the scope of facilities, student support, and research capabilities the GUDRH brings to the region. We had the pleasure of sharing highlights from our recent interprofessional emergency simulation exercise, which brought together medicine, nursing, and allied health students in a collaborative training environment.

The visit also opened an important conversation around the maldistribution of health professionals relative to community need, and are grateful for Their Excellencies' time and interest in the GUDRHโ€™s work towards strengthening healthcare outcomes across regional Western Australia.
