GUDRH Project Officer, Steph Bloor, and Curtin University’s Deputy Head of School (Allied Health), Peter Gardner, joined a group of 35 participants from 15 University Departments of Rural Health for the Longitudinal Integrated Placement Workshop in Broken Hill. Hosted by the Australian Rural Health Education Network (AHREN) and Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health , the dynamic and engaging two-day seminar focused on exchanging ideas and best practices for designing and implementing longitudinal integrated placements.

Last week we welcomed a wonderful bunch of girls from Esperance Senior High School, who participated in a range of fun and engaging health career activities with our team, utilising our simulation room on campus. Hopefully we sparked a little curiosity and ambition in these students to explore future careers in rural health. It was a pleasure having you all! 🫶

During her speaking engagement GUDRH Director, Prof. Fiona Doolan-Noble, explored opportunities, misconceptions, (and surprises!), often found in a rural health care setting. She also highlighted the extreme privilege it is to be welcomed into, and work with, our rural and remote communities as a health professional. ✨ Congratulations to Northern Star Kalgoorlie Operations and Royal Flying Doctor Service WA on bringing the Goldfields Health Centre to life. The first GP clinic of its kind for RFDS, and we’re thrilled they chose the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as the very first location!

Through this fantastic new clinic, we’re proud to work alongside RFDS WA to expand our student placement opportunities, giving Goldfields UDRH students, and the next generation of rural health professionals, invaluable experience training together in an interprofessional primary health care setting.

The Kids Research Institute Australia launched Kalgoorlie’s very first STEM Festival last week, setting off a chain-reaction of fun amongst the Goldfields kids and community! Located at our Curtin University Kalgoorlie campus, local organisations, schools and students came together for 2 days of hands-on STEM fun to celebrate National Science Week.

The GUDRH team were busy on our health-sciences-inspired stall, featuring a "name this bone" challenge with our mascot "Bony Tony", alongside interactive tests of the body's reflexes and movement.

Other engaging activities included discovering the sugar content in different drinks, seeing the difference sunscreen can make to UV exposure, and creating DNA model sections to add to the Kids Institute’s record-breaking DNA model – now officially the world’s longest (262 metres) of spiraling science fun!

The Goldfields UDRH provides support to local health professionals, clinical supervisors, and preceptors. This includes specialised training, workshops and resources to enhance supervisory skills and provide the tools and support necessary for positive placement experiences for both clinicians and students.

As a clinical supervisor, you’ll work with the future healthcare workforce and join us in our mission to improve health outcomes for our Goldfields communities.
