Are your nutritional needs being met? Do you suspect you have heavy metal toxicity in the body?

I often request hair testing for patients to check for mineral deficiencies and/ or imbalances. Hair testing shows what's been happening nutritionally in the body over an approximate 3 month period. It also gives insight into metabolism and organ/ gland functioning.

Hair tissue testing is a good way to check for heavy metals in the body and to determine what is needed for detoxification.

The Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a test to consider when planning for pregnancy to check mineral balance and heavy metal toxicity in both partners.

HTMA can help me to provide more targeted naturopathic treatment.

Guacamole is so easy to make and it has plenty of nutritional value. Avocados are a source of Vitamins B2, B5, B6, copper, iron, manganese and potassium.

Guacamole also has the added benefits of raw garlic, and therefore may help to balance out microbiome, protect cells from damage and detoxify the liver.

Coriander can also be a great add in (if you are coriander inclined). It has been found to be helpful in heavy metal detoxification.

The recipe:

2 avocados - flesh scooped out and mashed
1 clove of garlic crushed
1/2 lemon squeezed (or to taste)
Pinch of Celtic sea salt
1 tspn of Coriander finely chopped (optional)
1 tablespoon of finely chopped tomato (optional)

I have been known to put this in the kids lunch boxes. Teachers would comment that they wanted to eat it 😄

I often prescribe garlic for patients to add to their diet. It is great for gut health. Garlic is an antibacterial, antifungal and anti-parasitic herb that helps to balance the gut microbiome. Garlic also has antioxidant properties, protecting the cells from toxins and damage.

The active constituents of garlic have been found to support Phase I and Phase II detoxification processes in the body. They inhibit the activation of carcinogens and promote the elimination of drugs, toxins and carcinogens from the body.

So raw or cooked? Garlic is most therapeutically active when it is raw. When garlic is cooked the activity of the enzyme alliinase , which is necessary to form allicin and the active organosulphur compounds of garlic, is inactivated or totally destroyed.

Crushing and chopping appears to enhance alliinase enzyme activity and the formation of the actives. Crushing and letting the garlic stand for 10 minutes prior to cooking has also been shown to retain some of the protective effects of garlic when heated but not as significantly as raw garlic.

So how to incorporate raw garlic into your diet?Homemade guacamole, salsa, homemade salad dressing and pesto for a start. Recipes to follow.........
