Patient Melba Gray enjoyed some very special cuddle therapy during her recent hospital stay, thanks to sweet therapy pup Charity 🐾💛

Preparing to spend her third week in hospital with a broken leg, Melba welcomed a visit from two-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Charity, even admitting she is not really an animal person.

“She’s very sweet,” Melba said, as Charity happily settled in for cuddles on the hospital bed.

Charity is part of the wonderful therapy dog team from Empower Assistance Dogs, who regularly visit the hospital with their handlers to brighten the days of patients and staff alike.

Volunteer Glenda Turner, who supports the visits, said there is always plenty of smiles and excitement on therapy dog days.

We are thrilled to announce that Charity and her puppy pals will be back again this year and we cannot wait to share more smiles, tail wags and paws-itivity 🐶✨

With 10 instruments between them and a remarkable combined age of 399 years, QEII Hospital's beloved volunteer singers, The Troupe, packs heart and soul into every performance. 🎶💗

For eight years and counting, The Troupe have delighted QEII's patients, visitors and staff with their harmonious melodies, sparking joy and comfort everywhere they go. ✨

"We have the best job in the hospital, because we go home smiling every day," said lead singer, Willie.

"It’s a joy to play our music to all the patients, doctors, nurses and staff, and we always have a great time. We are happy when we see people smiling and their moods are lifted.”

Their passion for lifting spirits has earned them a spot on the shortlist for the 2025 Metro South Health Volunteer Award. 🏆

Congratulations Willie, Cesare, Willie, Harry and Rose!

Meet Meeya - the singing nurse! 🎤

She's a clinical nurse in Logan Hospital's Paediatric Emergency Department (ED), mum of five, singer/songwriter and studying to become a nurse practitioner. 🌟

'As a senior paediatric nurse, I'm often the shift manager in the department,' Meeya said.

'I support junior staff, help with audits to improve our healthcare delivery and promote a positive working culture. I also get to know the families and help their children feel at ease about being in hospital.'

Meeya grew up in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne, where she lived for 15 years. There, she was a graphic designer, singer and musician until a serious illness changed her life in 2009. While being treated for swine flu in the intensive care unit (ICU), Meeya realised nursing was her calling.

'I loved my nurses so much I wanted to be one!' she said.

After getting her nursing degree in Melbourne, Meeya returned to Queensland and worked for a nursing agency for a few months. She applied for a permanent position in the Logan Hospital ED, and the rest is history.

'It was the best decision ever,' she said.

'I love how the team on shift (nurses, doctors, social workers, mental health) all work together for the good of the children. Everything we do is for them (and their families)—making it safe for them, helping them to feel at ease and bringing joy.

'Having that shared goal is fundamental for positive outcomes and the team at Logan brings that every single shift.'

Meeya is passionate about helping families from different cultures to learn and feel empowered about their child's health. She also has a special spot in her heart for the parents who bring their sick children into the ED. 🥰

'I was a mum before I was a nurse and will never forget how difficult it was being in hospital with my children, not understanding what was going on sometimes,' she said.

Outside of work, Meeya still loves to write songs and sing. She has her own YouTube channel, 'Musical Medicine with Nurse Meeya', where she performs her original songs to help children learn about their bodies and feel brave about hospital visits. 🎶

Thanks for sharing your incredible story with us, Meeya. 🤩

A day in the life of a speechie isn’t all talk. 👀

You might be surprised to learn that being a speechie—or speech pathologist—like Imogen isn’t all about speech development.

In fact, Imogen’s day working at Beaudesert Hospital is busy and varied.

‘I could be doing anything from assessing, diagnosing and treating children and adult outpatients and adult inpatients, to working with Beaudesert’s food services team to ensure meals meet auditing requirements for their texture and are safe for patients with swallowing difficulties, to triaging outpatient referrals or working on quality improvement projects,’ she said.

Speech pathologists work with patients of all ages to help with speech, voice, speaking, understanding language and swallowing and feeding problems.

Imogen recently made the tree change to the Scenic Rim region with her husband and says she loves serving her new community and connecting with patients and their families.

‘As a speechie, patients don’t come to me because “all is going well”, so I do what I can to make this tough time in their health journey a little bit better.’

‘I love the connection I get to make with patients and their families and do what I can to improve/support their communication or swallowing impairment, which can have a huge impact on their quality of life.’

Amazing work, Imogen! Thanks for all that you do for the Beaudesert community. 🥰

For Amanda Cox, nursing has always been more than a career. 💙

“I never wanted to be anything else,” she said.

Amanda began her nursing journey in far west NSW in 2003 and later moved to Queensland, where she spent several years in Logan Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit gaining leadership experience.

She has now joined Beaudesert Hospital as Nurse Unit Manager of the General Ward and P***n Creek Correctional Centre.

“Rural facilities are unique and no two days are the same,” Amanda said. “I love the variety, the close-knit team and the strong community focus. It feels like home.”

Amanda is looking forward to continuing to learn, supporting her team and delivering high-quality patient care, with the bonus of a scenic drive to P***n Creek. 🚗🌄

The best Christmas gift – the gift of life with a living donor kidney transplant. ❤️

32-year-old Codey had a living donor kidney transplant at PA Hospital last month, thanks to the remarkable gift from his brother Sajarn.

“I’m pretty sure the gift of life will see me through a few Christmases at least!” said Sajarn. “My brother needed help, and I didn’t even question it. I even had a goodbye kidney party."

“When I woke up after surgery, the doctors informed me that the kidney was already working producing urine and Codey hadn’t even got off the operating table yet. Mum and I started crying – to be so delighted about wee!"

One month on, and Codey is now experiencing life with a functional kidney and the warm glow of brotherly love that comes from knowing they are a perfect match. 🌟

“After the transplant when all your levels start coming up, you get your energy back and you recognise this is how it is supposed to be," said Codey. "It’s the best gift I’ve ever received!”

Codey said all the PA Hospital staff were so caring and knowledgeable, and he was also grateful for the cultural support he received during this journey from Kidney Indigenous Health Workers Brett and Annika.

The powerful story is a reminder of the life-changing impact of living organ donation, and the incredible care provided by the teams at PAH. 👏

A kind donation of 12 wooden digital photo frames is helping bring comfort to patients in the Palliative Care ward at Logan Hospital. 🖼️

Gordon Pink was the first patient to receive a frame, just in time for Christmas. He was thrilled to be able to look at photos of family and special memories from his hospital bed.

The frames will soon be set up across Ward 3C so all palliative care patients can enjoy seeing photos of their loved ones during their stay. ❤️
