Shout out to the incredible Central Sterilising Department (CSD) team at QEII Hospital who have been praised for their outstanding contribution to patient care. 🩵

Often described as the hospital’s hidden engine room, the CSD team plays a vital role in ensuring clinicians have the sterile equipment they need to safely care for patients.

From theatres to clinics and endoscopy, the 44-strong team of dedicated nurses and sterilisation technicians work behind the scenes to clean, disinfect, sterilise and supply reusable medical devices used across the hospital to meet strict safety and quality standards.

Nurse Unit Manager Antony Kocheril said teamwork is central to the department’s success.

“Last calendar year alone we sterilised 76,286 reusable medical devices. Working in CSD it’s important that we all work together so our medical teams can get the best outcomes for patients right across the hospital,” Antony said.

“A good sense of humour serves us well and we make sure we look after each other. We even do coordinated stretching together to keep our bodies and our heads in the game.”

Well done team! ⭐

Congratulations to Jayden and Steven from PA Hospital’s Burke Street Centre Safety and Response team who have been recognised for their ability to go beyond the call of duty to support the clinical teams. ⭐

The pair say the collegial relationships within the outpatient facility foster a community spirit where everyone knows everyone and is willing to go above and beyond for their fellow teams.

"I really enjoy meeting patients and understanding what they are going through,” Steven said.

“Home dialysis training patients come in multiple days and they are really going through it with their diagnosis and what dialysis means for their life. We offer a personalised service so that they familiarise with the centre and where they are going to reduce that stress on them.

“I can absolutely say we love our job and doing life alongside the teams here.” 🩵

Well done Jayden and Steven for receiving the PA Hospital Staff Award for February!

Nurses in PA Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit are preparing to swap their scrubs for swimmers and spandex suits as they tackle the Bribie Triathlon, all to raise funds for the PA Research Foundation. 🚴‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏃‍♀️

The incredible staff, who are no strangers to working under pressure, will be putting their skills to the test in open water before cycling and running their way to the finish line in teams.

Regardless of the outcome, the motive behind the mission is certainly worthy of celebration.

Every kilometre they swim, ride and run will be dedicated to patients and families facing challenges far tougher than a triathlon.

Funds raids will support initiatives that enhance comfort, dignity, and connection.

Shout-out to all the ICU staff who are proving their endurance and compassion doesn’t stop at the end of a shift. Good luck teams! 💪

Logan Hospital’s Dr Erynn McAuley is dedicated to enhancing outcomes for people living with kidney disease. 💜

As a Senior Kidney Dietitian Diabetes Educator, Erynn works closely with Pasifika and Māori communities, codesigning a culturally safe, person-centred kidney program shaped by community voices and lived experience.

“Our team's greatest strength is the combination of cultural guidance from members from the Pasifika community and the expertise that our interdisciplinary team brings,” she said.

“I have always had an interest in health and nutrition, and having grown up with chronic health conditions, nutrition has always played an important role in my life,” she explained. “This led me to start my second undergraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics.”

Well done Erynn and thank you for all that you do! 🙌

Congratulations to PA Hospital Emergency Medicine Specialist and Toxicology lead, Associate Professor Katherine Isoardi for winning an Excellence in Leadership award. 🏆

Dr Isoardi was recognised at the Metro South Health Staff Awards Gala for her vision, dedication and clinical impact in her specialty of Clinical Toxicology.

“Too often poisoned patients are overlooked,” she said. “My work is about making sure they aren’t.”

“A point of pride in developing our multidisciplinary workforce was the creation of Australia’s first Nurse Practitioner in Toxicology which has been a real innovation in the delivery of clinical care in the Emergency Department.”

Dr Isoardi’s leadership also extends to research translation and championing innovation - a key part of the nomination which secured her the award for 2025. 🔬

“Fostering research opportunities across disciplines with a broad range of clinicians develops our capacity to engage in meaningful and practice-changing research to influence guidelines across Australia and embed interprofessional collaboration that improves care."

Congratulations Dr Isoardi. Thank you for leading with purpose, integrity, passion, and inspiring all those around you. 👏

One of Redland Hospital’s longest-serving nurses is marking the end of an era after more than four decades in the profession and almost 39 years caring for the Redlands community. ❤️

Emergency Department nurse Shirley Timmins began at Redland Hospital when the service first opened the doors to the original hospital, which now houses Allied Health Services.

“The staff in the Emergency Department where I work have been like family,” she said. “When the hospital opened, we were a small team with a big responsibility, and we relied on each other. That closeness has stayed with me my whole career.”

She said patient needs had grown more complex over time, but the heart of nursing had remained the same.

“I absolutely love nursing, I’m not leaving because I don’t love the profession,” she said. “I’ve always felt like I still had something to give, not just to patients but to junior nurses and my colleagues as well.”

Thank you for everything you've done Shirley! 🙌

Research underway at QEII Hospital is helping identify practical ways to strengthen person-centred compassionate care (PCCC). 🫶

Co-led by Dr Ruth Cox, QEII Hospital’s Director of Occupational Therapy and Dr Jayne Hewitt, Senior Research Fellow (Nursing), the mixed-methods research project aims to address gaps in peer-reviewed evidence guiding the delivery of PCCC to improve healthcare quality, safety and wellbeing for patients.

Delivered in two stages, Jayne said the project is engaging consumers and healthcare professionals to design a compassion-centred care intervention.

“Together we have agreed to focus on improving patient journey boards at the bedside. There is real potential to strengthen how these boards support communication about a patient’s needs and priorities,” Jayne said.

“Our focus is on incorporating patient and family feedback without adding to nursing workload.”

The research team includes Professor Liz Ward, Dr Emilia Dauway, Dr Sanjeev Naidu, Dr Jodie Nixon, and consumer partners Mr Alex McConnell and Dr Faiza El-Higzi. 👏

Meet Drs Prem, Jordan and Estelle. 👑

Prem is the Director of Redland Hospital's obstetrics and gynaecology department, and Jordan and Estelle are Principal House Officers (doctors in their third or fourth post-graduate year who have not yet started formal accredited training in a specialty area).

The trio care for women throughout every stage of their lives, helping them stay healthy and make informed decisions about their bodies. This includes supporting their reproductive health, guiding them through pregnancy and birth, and providing care later in life as their needs change. 👩

Whether it’s working alongside midwives to support women welcoming their babies into the world, performing surgical procedures or seeing patients in the clinic, they do it all with compassion and kindness.

Best of all, this amazing team of doctors are always there for each other. 🤗

'I appreciate how supportive and collaborative my colleagues are. We communicate openly, we back each other during busy or challenging moments, and we celebrate the wins together,' Prem said.

'Working with a team who genuinely cares about both patients and each other makes the work incredibly meaningful and deeply rewarding.'

What inspirational powerhouses! ❤️

The new Logan Hospital Precinct Police Beat has officially opened, marking six years of strong partnership between Logan Hospital and the Queensland Police Service.

What began as a three-month trial of the Logan Police Liaison Service in 2020 has grown into a permanent police presence, helping support the safety of staff, patients, families and visitors.

A big thank you to the Queensland Police Service for their ongoing support in helping keep our hospital community safe. 👏

Some four-legged friends are bringing comfort and connection for critically ill patients and their families in the Intensive Care Unit at PA Hospital. 🐶

Supported by a Metro South Health Novice Research Grant, the project to evaluate the impacts of weekly Delta Therapy Dogs visits for patients, visitors and staff in ICU was led by Clinical Nurse and Principal Investigator in ICU, Tania Lovell.

“ICU can be a challenging place for patients and families,” Tania said. “Creating even a small moment of comfort and connection - and supporting staff wellbeing - has motivated me to keep driving this project forward.”

The majority of survey respondents across all groups reported improvements in mood and reduced stress with acceptability for the intervention reported at 97 per cent for patients, 99 per cent for staff and 100 per cent for visitors.

A big thank you to Delta Therapy Dogs, the research team and PAH’s amazing ICU team for making every meaningful visit safe and special. ❤️

Needles, swabs and specimen jars aren’t most people’s idea of a good day, but they’re exactly where Bayside’s phlebotomy team vibes! 💉

Working across the wards and the Central Specimen Reception (the lab), the team is dual-trained to collect, process, and coordinate a wide range of tests, from blood and urine samples to specialised screening.

Phlebotomist Robyn said the role goes well beyond taking blood.

“Our team is unique; there aren’t many teams set up like us with the ability to scale up and down across our wards and the lab because our team is so well-trained,” she said.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as showing patients the equipment or letting them hold the tube so they know what to expect, that reassurance makes a big difference.”

Shout-out to all our incredible phlebotomists! ❤️

“If you live in Australia, you need to swim. It’s not just about safety. It’s about belonging.” 🌊

Since 2003, the Aqua English project has been helping newly arrived migrants, refugees and carers build confidence in the pool while strengthening their English skills.

It’s a simple idea that’s inspiring more people to feel safe, capable and connected; both in the water and in their learning journey.

Marseem is one of them.

“Swimming wasn’t part of my life growing up. I never imagined I could do it let alone teach it," she said.

Through Aqua English, Marseem learned to float, breathe and find calm. Step by step, her confidence grew. ✨

“One day, I realised, I can do this. Not just for me, but for others. I wanted to help my community learn too.”

Today, she’s a swimming teacher, supporting adults and children, often in Kurdish or Arabic, so they feel understood from the very first lesson.

“Swimming is freedom. When they see me in the water, someone who started just like them, they believe they can do it too. That makes all the difference.” 🤍
