Sleeve gastrectomy surgery can be an important step in supporting long-term health and weight management for individuals with obesity. While the procedure plays a role in reducing stomach capacity, ongoing lifestyle changes form a major component of sustainable progress.

Patients often ask about weight-loss patterns, but remember, however, that results vary significantly between individuals, and no specific outcome can be predicted or guaranteed.

Based on clinical research, the patterns often include:

🔹Early Phase: Rapid weight reduction in the first few months.
🔹3–6 Months: Continued loss, though the rate may slow as your body adapts.
🔹12 Months & Beyond: Long-term success relies heavily on your commitment to new habits and follow-up care.

As I reflect on the past year, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the many courageous individuals who placed their faith in me for their surgical needs.

We celebrated incredible milestones together: from successful procedures and smooth recoveries to significant, sustainable health improvements. Witnessing your renewed vitality is the most rewarding part of my work.

To all my patients who are continuing their post-operative care: I'm excited to continue this important journey with you in 2026. Remember, surgery is a powerful tool, but the long-term success is a partnership.

There are 7 general factors that may influence variations.

Because these factors differ widely between individuals, no two journeys look the same. We provide comprehensive support to help you manage these variables, emphasising the vital roles played by nutrition, physical activity, and collaboration with our multidisciplinary care team.

Undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy is a major step in your health journey—but it’s just the beginning. The weeks and months that follow are crucial for adjustment, changing eating habits, and shaping your new lifestyle.

At my practice in Gosford on the Central Coast, I focus on guiding patients through each phase of recovery so you know what’s ahead, can plan effectively, and feel supported every step of the way.

In this blog, I walk you through the typical post-operative timeline, highlight what you might experience in each stage, offer practical advice, and explain how to work with your care team for the best outcome.

If you’re considering surgery or seeking ongoing support, our team is here for you.

Undergoing bariatric surgery is a life-changing commitment to better health, but the journey doesn't end in the operating theatre. As your digestive system changes, knowing how to eat is just as crucial as the procedure itself!

As your surgeon, I'm committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcome — and that means understanding how to eat, recover, and thrive after your procedure.

Here are 8 specific categories of foods that bariatric patients should avoid or significantly reduce to prevent discomfort, complications, and support maintained weight loss.

Weight-loss surgery has been shown to increase the production of hormones such as GLP-1, which has a positive effect on insulin production. With more insulin available, the body is better able to move blood sugar into the cells to be used for energy, rather than letting it build up in the bloodstream.

These changes can begin to take place soon after surgery, to the point where many patients have been able to lower their dosage of diabetes medication right away. Within 2 years, many patients experience remission of their diabetes and no longer need to take any medication at all.

If you meet these criteria and are ready to explore your options, book an appointment with Dr Peter Hamer by calling (02) 4380 8404.
