Masking VS Self Acceptance

One of the most impactful things we can do is help our children understand their identity from a strengths-based, affirming lens. Research shows that children who learn about their neurodivergence in safe, validating ways experience better mental health, stronger self-esteem, and greater resilience later in life.

As parents and educators, we often see the outward behaviour first; the shutdown, the outburst, the withdrawal.

RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria) is something that comes up a lot when we’re understanding these moments.

Often described as “overreacting” or being “too sensitive” to a situation, RSD is a real, intense response to feeling rejected, criticised, or misunderstood.

When we understand where the behaviour is coming from, it changes how we respond.

We move from:
👉 “What’s going on here?”

to:
👉 “What might this child/individual be feeling or needing right now?”

When we respond with curiosity, safety, and connection, we create space for children/individuals to:
✨ explore their feelings
✨ feel understood
✨ build regulation over time

This is how we reduce the impact. Not by stopping the behaviour, but by supporting what’s underneath it.

Today is Autism Day 💛

And while it matters… this isn’t something we switch on for one day.

At Grow, this is everyday life.

Our neuroaffirming approach means not having to hide or change who you are to be accepted.

Our work is shaped by lived experience, guided by autistic voices, and grounded in relationships, safety, and trust.

Because when people feel safe to be themselves…they can thrive.

Today we pause to acknowledge the day and our growing autistic community.
And tomorrow, we keep doing what we’ve always done.

Making space for people to be fully themselves.

Something that has been popping up in our sessions recently - Idioms!

We use idioms all the time… often without even noticing.

“Hold your horses.”
“Spill the beans.”
“Piece of cake.”

For many people, these phrases make sense instantly.
But for others—particularly autistic individuals—language is often processed literally.

And when words don’t match their meaning, it can create confusion, frustration, or a sense of being “lost” in conversation.

Albeit challenging..This isn’t a deficit.
It’s a different way of understanding language.

Literal processing often reflects a strength in clarity, logic, and precision; traits that we should be valuing, not correcting.

As communication partners, we can:
• Say what we mean
• Reduce ambiguity
• Explain when needed
• Create space for different ways of understanding

Because inclusion isn’t just about access…
it’s about being understood.

Is there an idiom you’ve come across that’s got you totally confused?! Pop it in the comments so we can learn together 👇🏼

We are seeing more and more people identifying as neurodivergent - both through formal diagnosis and self-identification.

And with that, comes conversation. Curiosity. And sometimes… misunderstanding.

Neurodivergent/ Neurodivergence is not a diagnosis.

It’s a term created by the community to describe the natural diversity of human brains; ways of thinking, processing, communicating and experiencing the world that differ from what is considered “typical.”

Language matters.
Because for many, having this language has been life-changing.
It has given people a way to finally articulate their experiences - often after years of confusion, mislabelling, or feeling “out of place.”

But as awareness grows, so do the narratives around it.

We’re starting to see neurodivergence spoken about like a trend.
Like something that makes someone “better,” “more creative,” or “more intelligent.”

And while there are absolutely strengths and incredible perspectives within neurodivergent ways of being —
we also need to hold space for the full picture.

Because for many, these differences are not just identity…
they are also disabling.

They impact access.
They impact participation.
They impact safety, learning, relationships, and daily life.

And those experiences matter too.

Identifying as neurodivergent — or receiving a diagnosis — doesn’t place someone into a “special club.”

But it can open the door to something far more meaningful:
👉 understanding
👉 validation
👉 community
👉 connection with people who get it

Support needs also aren’t one-size-fits-all.

Some people may move through the world with minimal barriers.
Others require ongoing accommodations, adjustments, and support to live, learn, and participate safely.

Both experiences are valid.
Both deserve respect.

So as this space continues to grow, let’s stay grounded in what actually matters…

✔ listening without assumptions
✔ respecting individual experiences
✔ using thoughtful, informed language
✔ and taking neurodivergence seriously (beyond trends or labels)

Because while the language and terminology may be new, the way we use it and respond to it, has lifelong impacts.

Some of the most important parenting moments don’t happen in therapy rooms or classrooms.

They happen on the floor while you’re playing.
In the quiet car rides.
In the everyday routines that no one else sees.

If you’re raising a neurodivergent child and want to better understand their communication, regulation, and needs through the little, natural moments… our neuroaffirming parenting program was created for you.

Because real support should feel practical, compassionate, and connected to real life.

Term 2 commences 29th April - online.
