Term 2 is underway — and your child’s vision is doing one of the most important jobs it will ever do.
Here’s a figure that doesn’t get enough attention: up to 80% of what a child learns in the classroom is delivered visually. Whiteboards, books, worksheets, digital screens — all of it depends on the ability to see clearly at varying distances.
And yet 1 in 5 children in Australia has an undetected vision problem.
The difficult thing is that children don’t know what “normal” vision looks like. They assume everyone sees the way they do. So they don’t complain — they just struggle.
Signs that are easy to miss:
- Losing their place when reading
- Avoiding books or close tasks
- Sitting too close to the TV or classroom screen
- Rubbing their eyes frequently
- Headaches at the end of the school day
- Short attention span, often misread as behavioural
If you can’t remember when your child last had an eye test, that’s probably your answer.
