Term 2 is underway — and your child’s vision is doing one of the most important jobs it will ever do.

Here’s a figure that doesn’t get enough attention: up to 80% of what a child learns in the classroom is delivered visually. Whiteboards, books, worksheets, digital screens — all of it depends on the ability to see clearly at varying distances.

And yet 1 in 5 children in Australia has an undetected vision problem.

The difficult thing is that children don’t know what “normal” vision looks like. They assume everyone sees the way they do. So they don’t complain — they just struggle.

Signs that are easy to miss:

- Losing their place when reading
- Avoiding books or close tasks
- Sitting too close to the TV or classroom screen
- Rubbing their eyes frequently
- Headaches at the end of the school day
- Short attention span, often misread as behavioural

If you can’t remember when your child last had an eye test, that’s probably your answer.

Bulk billing available for children (out of pocket expenses apply for imaging costs).

Book online or call our team on 9143 0037.

Summer in the Pilbara doesn’t mess around.

Months of UV exposure, glare bouncing off red earth, long days outdoors, dust in the air. Your eyes have been through it.

The problem? UV damage to your eyes is silent. There’s no sunburn you can see. No blister. No warning at the time.

But over time, prolonged UV exposure is directly linked to cataracts forming earlier, pterygium — that fleshy growth on the white of the eye — macular degeneration, and in some cases, ocular surface melanoma.

We see it regularly here. Patients who’ve lived and worked in the Pilbara for years, often without adequate eye protection, and the cumulative effects tell a clear story.

The cooler months are actually the ideal time to book a comprehensive check. Your eyes deserve the same attention you give the rest of your body after a big summer.

Let's talk about glasses as style icons (because they are)...

You wouldn't wear the same outfit to:

✓ Job interview
✓ Barbecue with mates

So why settle for one pair of glasses for everything?

Here's something interesting: We can detect serious health conditions just by looking in your eyes.

Swipe across to see what health conditions we can detect through retinal photography (you'll be surprised by the last one).

🙈 The scary part: Most of these conditions have NO symptoms in early stages.

By the time you notice something's wrong, significant damage has occurred.

👍🏼 The good part: Early detection = early treatment = better outcomes.

What we check that non-independent optometrists don't:
✓ Detailed retinal photography (permanent records)
✓ Optic nerve assessment
✓ Blood vessel analysis
✓ Pressure monitoring over time
✓ Comparison with previous exams

This is why we spend 30 minutes, not 15.
This is why comprehensive matters.
This is why ""just updating your prescription"" isn't enough.

Your eyes tell your health story. Let us read it.

For an eye test that goes deeper than 'good enough' book with us online or call 9143 0037.

Could we do 15-minute appointments and see 4x more patients?
Yes.

Could we use cheaper equipment and increase our margins?
Yes.

Could we push glasses sales harder and boost revenue?
Yes.

But we won't.

Here's why:
✓ Because rurality demands morality.
✓ Because you deserve better.
✓ Because prevention matters more than profit.
✓ Because we live here too.
✓ Because it's the right thing to do.

We could make more money doing things the franchise way.
But we'd lose what makes us... us.

And you'd lose access to independent, ethical, thorough eye care in Karratha.

So we'll keep:
✓ Spending the time you deserve
✓ Using the best equipment available
✓ Putting your health over our sales
✓ Being solution-finders, not excuse-makers

Because that's what ""we don't say no"" actually means.

Thanks for choosing values over convenience.

One of our frequently asked questions is ""why do your appointments take so long?""

Let us show you what you get in an appointment:

🤷🏼FRANCHISE ""EYE TEST"" (15 min):

→ Quick prescription check
→ Basic ""can you see this?"" test
→ Push glasses sale
→ Next patient, please

Swipe across to get the details on what WE offer as your local, independent optometrist.

We don't rush because your eyes deserve better.

Ask any local: something changes in the air around April.

The humidity drops. The wind picks up. The air gets drier. And if you already struggle with uncomfortable eyes, you’re probably already feeling it.

Dry eye disease is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions we see, and it’s significantly more prevalent in regional areas where sun exposure, dust, screen time, and air conditioning combine to work against your eyes simultaneously.

Symptoms worth taking seriously:

👉🏽 A gritty or sandy feeling, as though something is behind your eyelid
👉🏽 Eyes that water excessively (yes, watery eyes are actually a common dry eye symptom)
👉🏽 Blurred vision that briefly clears when you blink
👉🏽 Sensitivity to light or wind
👉🏽 Eyes that feel genuinely tired by early afternoon

These aren’t minor annoyances. Untreated dry eye disease can cause real, long-term damage to the corneal surface (which gives your eyes 70% of its focusing power)

The good news: it’s very manageable when treated properly. And our approach goes well beyond telling you to try some drops.

We have the equipment right here in our clinic to help treat and manage your dry eyes, so you don't have to travel to Perth to find a solution.

Give us a call on 9143 0037 to learn more about what this treatmet includes, and you can book your appointment with us at the same time.

It's more than eye exams and glasses for us.

We didn't start Karratha Eyecare to simply 'fill a gap' or provide more options for locals.

For us, it's about ensuring regional communities have access to quality healthcare, because your postcode doesn't determine your level of care.

Being an independent optometrist means we're able to explore innovative options to support your eye health - we don't say no until we've exhausted every avenue available to us!

And the best part? We're a local team - we live, work and play in the City of Karratha. Not only do we understand your unique challenges, but we understand YOU and everything you're juggling in your life so we will work with you to provide healthcare that works with your lifestyle, not the other way round.

For your next eyecare appointment, choose the team who combines innovation, technology and premium care.

If you're doing the "long arm stretch" to read your phone, this is your sign 😅

Welcome to your 40s, where:

4️⃣0️⃣ Phone needs to be at arm's length
4️⃣0️⃣ Restaurant menus are "too dark"
4️⃣0️⃣ You're Googling "why can't I see up close anymore"
4️⃣0️⃣ Your kids are roasting you (lovingly)

It's called presbyopia - and literally everyone gets it. Your eye's lens loses flexibility over time. Normal aging. Nothing wrong with you.

The good news:
✓ Progressive lenses (no visible line!)
✓ Look natural, work perfectly
✓ See clearly at ALL distances
✓ No more arm stretching
✓ No more "is this font tiny or is it just me?"

Even better news:
Most people adjust to progressives within a few days. It's not the nightmare your mum told you about (lens technology has come a LONG way).

Stop the arm wrestling with your phone.

Book your appointment: 9143 0037 or online (www.karrathaeyecare.com.au/online-bookings).
