🧠 Friday 5 September – Be Kind to Your Mind
🩷 It’s Women’s Health Week – 1st to 5th September!
This week, we’re shining a light on the health and wellbeing of women living in rural and remote communities across the Pilbara.

Jean Hailes’ theme this year is “Say yes to you” — a powerful reminder that your health matters, no matter where you live.

🧠 Today’s focus is “Be kind to your mind” — because mental health is just as important as physical health.
In remote areas, isolation and stress can take a toll. Let’s encourage women across the Pilbara to check in with themselves and each other.

🌿 Take time for yourself
📞 Reach out to someone you trust
💬 Access support through local services or telehealth

Let’s build mentally healthy communities, one conversation at a time.

🔥 Thursday 4 September – Pain to Power
🩷 It’s Women’s Health Week – 1st to 5th September!
This week, we’re shining a light on the health and wellbeing of women living in rural and remote communities across the Pilbara.

Jean Hailes’ theme this year is “Say yes to you” — a powerful reminder that your health matters, no matter where you live.

🔥 Today’s focus is “Pain to power” — a reminder that pain isn’t just “part of being a woman.”
In rural communities, women often wait longer for diagnosis and support. Whether it’s endometriosis, chronic pain, or fatigue — your pain is real, and you don’t have to push through it alone.

🗣️ Talk to your health provider
🤝 Connect with local services
💪 You deserve care and support

Let’s turn pain into power across the Pilbara.

❤️ Wednesday 3 September – Heart Smart
🩷 It’s Women’s Health Week – 1st to 5th September!
This week, we’re shining a light on the health and wellbeing of women living in rural and remote communities across the Pilbara.

Jean Hailes’ theme this year is “Say yes to you” — a powerful reminder that your health matters, no matter where you live.

❤️ Today’s focus is “Heart smart” — because heart disease affects women differently, and symptoms are often missed.
In rural and remote communities, early detection and small lifestyle changes can make a big impact.

💓 Know the signs: fatigue, breathlessness, chest discomfort
🩺 Ask your GP or nurse about a heart health check
🥗 Stay active and eat well — even small changes help

Let’s keep rural hearts strong and informed.

💪 Tuesday 2 September – Take the Lead

🩷 It’s Women’s Health Week – 1st to 5th September!
This week, we’re shining a light on the health and wellbeing of women living in rural and remote communities across the Pilbara.

Jean Hailes’ theme this year is “Say yes to you” — a powerful reminder that your health matters, no matter where you live.

💪 Today’s focus is “Take the lead” — encouraging women to be informed and confident when it comes to their health.
In rural communities, where appointments may be few and far between, being prepared can make all the difference.

📝 Write down your questions
💊 Bring your medication list
🗣️ Don’t be afraid to speak up — your health is worth it

Let’s empower Pilbara women to take the lead in their health journey.

🩷 Monday 1 September – Every Check Matters
🩷 Today’s focus is “Every check matters” — and that’s especially true in rural and remote communities, where access to services can be limited and health checks are often delayed.

✅ Cervical, breast, heart, and mental health checks — they all matter.

🎥 Thinking about a rural health placement?

Hear from Edith Cowan University (ECU) Occupational Therapy students Ella and Zara, who spent 7 weeks in Roebourne, gaining hands-on experience in aged care and youth services at Yaandina Community Services.

🫶 From yarning with Elders to playing hopscotch with the kids and joining community bike rides, this placement offered more than just clinical learning.

🎉 WACRH at PKKP Community Event - NAIDOC 2025 🌿

Pharmacy, Social Work, and Psychology students from WACRH proudly participated in the NAIDOC Community Event on the Grass, hosted by PKKP Aboriginal Corporation in Karratha.

Students connected with community members through:
✨ Fan-folding activities featuring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags 🖤❤️💛 💚💙🤍
🎨 Colouring-in stations for kids and families
💓 Blood pressure checks and heart health awareness with our Nursing Lecturer Karlee

Beyond the activities, students built meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organisations, gaining valuable insights into the vital work these groups do to support community wellbeing.

🫶 Students Celebrate Elders' Birthday at Roebourne 🫶

WACRH's Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer, Annette and Allied Health students on placement in Karratha and Roeboune studying:
🎓 Occupational Therapy (Edith Cowan University (ECU))
🎓 Pharmacy (Charles Sturt University),
🎓 Psychology (La Trobe University & Curtin University)

recently joined the annual Old People's Birthday celebration at the historic Old Roebourne Reserve.

This special event offered a meaningful opportunity to connect with local Elders, share meals, exchange stories, and build relationships with community organisations — planting seeds for future collaborations.

📅 Why July 1st Matters in Roebourne

For over 30 years, July 1st has held deep cultural significance. Originally chosen as a collective birthday for those without official birth records, it has grown into a cherished tradition that honours Elders and their stories.

This day is now recognised as Roebourne’s most important NAIDOC celebration, intertwined with local TAFE and school events, and also marks Coming of the Light, a key moment for Torres Strait Islander communities.

The celebration takes place at the Old Reserve, a site rich in history — once home to many locals before Roebourne town was established, and the birthplace of the Pilbara Aboriginal Church, founded over 50 years ago.

A day of connection, culture, and community.
