Many people who have low back pain and disc degeneration are mistakenly led to believe that the disorder can ONLY be cured by surgery. Unfortunately, there are multiple risks that come along with this surgery and there is no guarantee that it can fix your symptoms, with some patients reporting to still have pain and residual neurological deficits after the surgery.
The reality is disc degeneration is by no means a marker of how “damaged” your back is, how severe your low back pain is, or how long the pain will last for. In fact, it is well documented that disc degeneration can also be found in young, active individuals and most individuals with intervertebral disc degeneration have no symptoms at all.
In the 1990’s it was believed that disc degeneration was caused by a person’s occupation, too much activity, or from repeated shocks and vibration to the back. However, much more recent research has highlighted the major role genetics has and therefore shifted away from believing this is caused throughout life to a belief that this is a normal part of the aging process.
It has been shown that the majority of people who have back pain with disc degeneration will improve through a structured exercise program and WITHOUT surgical treatment. A study found that patients who underwent a 6-week course of exercises and physiotherapy emphasising core strengthening, stretching, and weight loss showed to have a significant improvement in symptoms and a better quality of life.
