QUT Guild Disability Collective

QUT Guild Disability Collective A hub for QUT students with a disability, chronic illness, mental health condition or neurodivergence

The Disability Collective provides a mutually supportive and caring community to welcome students with disability into QUT and provide the connections and resources needed to make sure we all have equitable access to education and opportunities at university. Any QUT student who has a disability, chronic illness and/or mental health condition may join the Disability Collective through our private Facebook group, linked below. This group is where students may share experiences, seek advice, and provide resources to each other. https://www.facebook.com/groups/qutguilddisabilitycollective

The group is private and closed to disabled students only, so people outside the group cannot see who is in it. We ask that abled/non-disabled people instead follow this page and our Instagram, , to learn more about disability and how to combat ableism in society. We're always on the lookout for students willing to get involved. Initiatives such as sharing experiences for our awareness-raising posts, helping host events, and many other goals are something available to all students. You don't need to be on our executive team to request funding for an initiative; you can contact any of the below people for more information on how to fund your ideas for improving the university experience for disabled students. Are you attending the Special General Meeting tomorrow at the Riverstage? Have accessibility needs? Read below to find out what is happening accessibility-wise at the Special General Meeting (SGM) tomorrow.

If you need to use an accessible entrance or have any access needs, it has been asked if you could please wear a sunflower lanyard (there are currently some in the Disability Room at Kelvin Grove if you do not have one) so the volunteers can easily identify people who might need to be directed to the accessible entrance/accessible seating. If you don’t want to wear one/cannot wear one, you can of course still approach volunteers for access help, the lanyard is more to make things easier for the volunteers. There will be accessible seating and the SGM will also be Auslan interpreted.

Also, you will need to bring your digital ID (as in, the ID card on the QUT app on your phone or other device) instead of a physical ID to prove that you are a student. As the SGM is being held at the Riverstage, there will be bag checks upon entry to check for disallowed items such as glass or umbrellas. There will be some collective executives as volunteers on the day, and they will hopefully be at the accessible entrance/part of the volunteer team that helps with access.

Hope to see a lot of you attending!

July is Disability Pride Month! What does this mean?

Disability Pride Month is a time for the disabled community to promote awareness, celebrate and encourage self-acceptance around disability. As there is still much stigma and misinformation around disability, July is a great time to encourage everyone to educate themselves on current views and perspectives within the disabled community.

This July, make sure you are using correct and inclusive language when discussing disability. Terms like 'special needs', 'differently abled' and 'handicapped' are outdated and do not help to spread the message that 'disabled' is not a dirty word. For a more in-depth inclusive language guide, check out our Linktree.
