Attending the Convergence of Rebellious Midwives in Sydney earlier this year reaffirmed for me how beautifully homebirth supports the physiology of birth and the power of minimal intervention.

There’s something really special about visiting families in their own home in those first days after birth.

Mum can stay rested, focus on self-care, and enjoy uninterrupted time bonding with her baby.

Babies absolutely love the beautiful sling when it comes to being weighed, it’s cozy, secure, and gentle, making check-ins calm and relaxed for everyone.

This beautiful sling was made by AKA , and it’s such a lovely way to make postpartum visits feel relaxed and personal.

A little look at the week that’s been (and an insight into what my life looks like when I’m not working as a midwife). The last picture is my new grandson 🩵

1. Off to Katanning for parts with my sidekick CC 🤍
2. Late-night harvest
3. Southern lights putting on a show ✨
4. Magic sunsets 🌌
5-7. Dinner drop-offs out in the paddock
8. A very special visit from my new grandson, Theo Benjamin, thank you Tessa and Coen 🩵

Whilst flowers and gifts for baby and mum may be nice, help with the practical side of parenting can really help reduce the stress and fatigue associated with having a brand new baby.

Some nice ideas are meal trains, help cleaning and folding washing, a coffee and breastfeeding snacks, running to the shops for food or chemist supplies, and even gift vouchers for a postpartum doula who can help with all of the above (such as Hayley from ✨)

When we nurture the mother, we nurture the baby too.

What was the most meaningful gift of support you received, or wish you’d had in those early days?

A homebirth means welcoming your baby in the comfort of your own home, supported by the midwife of your choice 🏡✨

At Stirling Midwifery, I bring the knowledge, experience, equipment, and calming presence to you, so you can birth in a space that feels safe, familiar, and deeply personal.

Benefits families often love:

🌸 Being in your own environment

🌸 Freedom to move, eat, and rest as you wish

🌸 Immediate bonding in your own space after birth

🌸 Continuity of care from a known midwife
For many, homebirth is about trust, choice, and creating a birth experience that feels aligned with their values.

Sterile water injections are a simple, quick option used during labour if significant back pain is experienced. This is something I can offer 🌸

Here’s how they work:

💉 A tiny amount of sterile water is injected just under the skin, usually in the lower back

⚡️ It creates a brief stinging sensation, but that passes quickly

✨ Many women then feel a sense of relief and release in their back/pelvis within minutes

It’s a safe, drug-free method that can be especially useful if back sensations are strong during labour.

How Does Acupressure Work in Labour?

Acupressure is a technique that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body (not needles)

🤲During labour, applying steady pressure to certain points can:
✨ Encourage relaxation
✨ Release tension
✨ Help the body’s natural rhythms flow

Partners often love learning these points too, because it gives them a meaningful way to support. 🫶

Ever heard of a TENS machine for labour? ⚡️

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It’s a small, handheld device that sends gentle electrical pulses through sticky pads placed on your lower back.

Many women describe it as:
✨ A tingling or buzzing sensation
✨ Something that helps distract and refocus the mind
✨ A tool you control yourself — you can turn it up or down as needed

It’s safe, drug-free, and can be used at home in early labour or in the birth space.

Note: this cannot be used in water.
