On Friday the Optometry team at our UNSW clinic will discharge their final patients. It has been a time of reflection for our team, and a time to focus on the many great achievements over the last 16 years.

mivision has published an article that captures the impressive impact of CFEH since its inception, and also identifies key lessons for the future. We highly recommend having a look.

This month, the Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) clinical team will discharge its final patients, marking the end of 16 years of diagnostic and management service provision. Since its establishment in 2009, as a joint venture between Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and the University of New South Wales, CFEH has bee...

This month, Retina Australia, a member of Retina International, named former CFEH Centre Director Professor Michael Kalloniatis as the first recipient of its newly established Hall of Fame Award. This award recognises individuals who have made lasting contributions towards improving the lives of those affected by inherited retinal diseases.

The CFEH team want to congratulate Michael on this very well-deserved award! Michael's interest and extensive knowledge of inherited retinal disease brought enormous benefit to staff, students and patients during his time at CFEH.

Did you know that individuals with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) have approximately a 10 times greater chance of developing glaucoma than those without?

Senior staff optometrist Nicole Lawson has taken an in-depth look at PXF and associated glaucoma this month in a CPD article for mivision. Quality assured by Optometry Australia for 1.25T hours with assessment, this article is well worth a read!

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) is the most common identifiable cause of open-angle glaucoma, with PXF-affected individuals demonstrating an approximately 10 times risk of developing glaucoma.

Join Michael Yapp and Judy Nam on Tuesday 12th August for an interactive webinar exploring the rapidly changing AI clinical landscape.

In the near future, AI integration will likely change the way we work as optometrists. This webinar offers the opportunity to understand how large-language models can be useful in disease diagnosis, but will also identify situations where inaccuracies may arise and increase the participant's understanding of why this may occur. Designed to promote critical thinking and understanding, this is an event not to miss!

Please note that a current CFEH Education subscription is needed to register for this event. More information can be found here: https://www.centreforeyehealth.com.au/learning-portal/

Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is a neurological condition only identified relatively recently.

Dr Bao Nguyen and Cassandra Brooks from the University of Melbourne are investigating VSS and invite all registered Optometrists in Australia to participate in a study investigating:
• What they currently know about VSS
• How they manage, or would manage, patients with VSS in their clinical practice
• Their education needs related to VSS.

Participation involves an online survey, which takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, and is anonymous, unless you opt-in to provide your contact details at the end.

To find out more and enter the survey: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/f3pp

For further information, please contact Dr Bao Nguyen (03) 9035 8553, bnguyen@unimelb.edu.au or Cassandra Brooks brooks.c@unimelb.au at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, The University of Melbourne

How can we at CFEH continue to support Optometrists and their patients now that we ae closed to new referrals?

Through the CFEH Telehealth service, which was developed to support our referrers in their diagnosis and management decisions.

So many Optometry practices now have access to imaging equipment, making telehealth a viable option for most. During a telehealth consultation, a CFEH Senior Staff Optometrist is available online to discuss imaging results as well as offer recommendations around disease diagnosis and management decisions.

This service is free of charge and is one of the many ways which CFEH will continue to support Optometrists to manage their own patients, within their own practice. This service is planned to continue through until June 2026.

Centre for Eye Health will no longer be accepting any new referrals, effective today. Additionally, we will be discharging all patients to appropriate, alternative care pathways over the course of the next 6-12 months.

Over the past 15 years we have operated. We have seen an impressive uptake of imaging technology within community optometry, accompanied by a significant increase in the ability of optometrists to diagnose and manage ocular disease. These changes underpin the decision by our founding organisation to transition funding away from early detection services, towards their low vision service offerings and promotion of social change.

As a team, we are committed to seeing all existing patients for a final review to ensure appropriate on-going care. A full report with patient history and imaging results will be sent to the optometrist/ophthalmologist taking over patient management as well as to the patients My Health Record if available.

CFEH Telehealth support will be available to provide diagnosis and management support to optometrists until June 2026.

As an organisation, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to the many referrers and collaborators who have supported CFEH over the last 15 years. We are immensely proud of the Centre’s many achievements over this time.
