🍂 Autumn in Melbourne & Fresh Chinese Herbs

As Melbourne moves into autumn, the weather becomes cooler and drier. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this season relates to the Lung system, which can be sensitive to dryness and temperature changes.

Many practitioners are now preparing raw herbal decoctions using fresh Chinese herbs. Slow cooking traditional formulas helps release the full properties of the herbs and supports the body as we transition toward winter.

It’s a good time to focus on gentle formulas that moisten the lungs, support immunity, and balance the body with the changing climate.

Fresh herbs, slow simmered, remain the traditional way to prepare seasonal formulas. 🌿🍵

We often think about the Five Elements (五行 – Wǔ Xíng) when selecting herbs. Everyone presents a different pattern, and Chinese herbs help restore balance between wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

When liver qi feels constrained (wood), I may reach for herbs like Chai Hu (柴胡) to help things move more smoothly.

If the heart needs support (fire), herbs such as Shan Zha (山楂) can gently assist circulation and digestion.

When the spleen and digestion are weak (earth), herbs like Ren Shen (人参) help replenish qi.

For lung support and strengthening defensive qi (metal), Huang Qi (黄芪) is a classic choice.

And when the body needs deeper nourishment (water), Shu Di Huang (熟地黄) helps support kidney essence.

This is the beauty of Chinese herbal medicine — working with nature’s pharmacy to guide the body back into balance.

In Chinese medicine, cultivating vitality begins with protecting the body’s Yang—the warming, activating force that transforms nourishment into Qi and Blood. When the central Yang is supported, the whole system has a strong root to grow from.

Herbs such as Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark) and Gan Jiang (dried ginger) are traditionally used to warm the middle, encourage circulation, and rekindle digestive fire—carefully selected to match each individual pattern.

As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect time to support your inner warmth. We carry these beautiful warming herbs in powdered, granule, and raw forms—ready to help you stay rooted, resilient, and well. 🌿

One too many pineapple tarts? A few too many reunion feeds? We get it. 😄

If your tummy’s feeling a bit ordinary after all the CNY goodies, it might be time for some Shan Zha (山楂).

Traditionally used to support digestion — especially after rich, meaty, or oily meals — Shan Zha is a simple way to help things settle back down.

Brew it up as a tea and give your stomach a bit of a reset.
Less heaviness, less bloating — just back to feeling right as rain. 🌿

From festive feasting to everyday balance — we’ve got your Shan Zha sorted!

Revisiting this herb on the long weekend
Huang Qi 黄芪

The beautiful Qi tonifying herb helps raise Yang in the Spleen and Stomach, especially for lack of appetite and fatigue
+
It is used in recovering stages such as postpartum, blood loss or frequent colds/weakness
+
Due to its sweet and warm nature, it is found in many herbal formulas. If you ever feel lifted after having herbal remedies, ask if they added Huang Qi 😉
