Happy Week!
The theme this year is Heal Country. Country is more than a place; country is family, kin, law, lore, ceremony, traditions, and language.
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it has been this way since the dawn of time.

The theme provides an opportunity for all Australians to come together and celebrate the rich culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to seek a greater understanding of the challenges, and actively contribute to the healing - we all have a part to play.

The 2021 National Naidoc Poster 'Care for Country' was designed by Gubbi Gubbi artist Maggie-Jean Douglas.

We had a very special patient join us at St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne last week. 12-year-old Ilona from PNG was born with Hemiplegia, a condition that causes paralysis vertically down one-half of the body. As a result, Ilona grew up walking on her right big toe, unable to put her foot flat on the ground. This caused her gait to be very unsteady, and she often fell over due to a lack of balance and co-ordination.

Ilona first visited us in 2019 to have plates inserted into her right hip to help stabilise and strengthen her foot, ankle, and hip. This week’s final surgery involved the removal of these plates.

We partner with a charity, Children First Foundation, to facilitate life-changing surgery at St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne for children from developing countries, where complex surgery is not available. The hospital gives the gift of surgery and recovery and generous surgical teams to enable children like Ilona to reach their full potential.

A/Prof Leo Donnan and our amazing team of healthcare professionals, and all of our Hospital family worked together this week to give Ilona first-class compassionate and excellent care.

We are delighted to advise that after a period of recovery and rehabilitation at the Children First Foundation Retreat, Ilona (and her dolly!) will soon be ready to head back home to PNG with a brighter future ahead of her – and doesn’t she have the smile to match!

National Refugee Week celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of refugees and provides an opportunity for people to learn about the experiences of people escaping oppression and seeking asylum. The theme for this year’s Refugee Week is unity - to promote harmony and togetherness.

For two hundred years now, Australia has been a welcome haven for many people fleeing violence, poverty, terror, and war. In every department of our Hospital, there would be a refugee or refugee’s child or grandchild working, contributing, and enriching our lives.

Every refugee story is different, and we urge you to share time with those in your community this week to hear about their stories. You will be inspired and in awe of the journey they have travelled. Our mission implores us to be committed to the poor and vulnerable – and who is more vulnerable than a person with no home, no family, and no status?

We support St Mary’s House of Welcome, McAuley, St Vincent de Paul Society, and The Wellington, who give unconditional support to many refugees in Melbourne. The beauty of their frontline work is that it is provided with generosity, tenderness, and dignity. When you can, please support these core agencies.

Here at St Vincent's Private, our focus is on providing patient-centered care. Our team focuses on partnering with our patients by asking them 'What Matters to you?' – to find out what is important to you and tailor our care to your individual needs and preferences.

Our team use a Careboard as a communication tool during your inpatient stay to write down your preferences, personalise your care, and improve communication.

This week across the globe, we acknowledge 'What Matters to You?' week and continue to promote person-centered care and improve the patient experience by asking What Matters to You?

World Heart Rhythm Week is an annual event, which aims to raise awareness of the symptoms of heart arrhythmia.

An estimated 6% of Australian adults aged 18 years and over had one or more conditions related to heart or vascular disease, including stroke.

What are heart arrhythmias?
Arrhythmia is a heart condition where your heart beats abnormally. It is caused by a problem with the electrical signals that coordinate heartbeats. The heart can beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly.

Heart arrhythmia symptoms. Many people with heart arrhythmias have no symptoms at all. But you might become aware of your heartbeat, which is known as having palpitations.

You might feel:
like your heart is skipping a beat
like your heart is beating too hard or fast
a racing heartbeat
a slow heartbeat
an irregular heartbeat
a fluttering in your chest
chest pain
feeling lightheaded or dizzy
sweating
fainting

If you have any concerns, please speak with your GP.

Today is World Environment Day, and we're proud to share a fantastic initiative of anaesthetist Dr. David Hays and collegues, which doctors and staff in our operating theatres participate in at all our Melbourne sites, the Little Blue Towels Project.

The project involves recycling sterile single-use surgical hand towels, which are then repurposed for sale. They are produced in a Twin pack, Five pack, Golf Towels, and a 10kg pack which are sold to industry and the Australian Defence Force. During October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Five packs are sold in branches of the Bendigo Bank, and it is planned that this will happen again this year.

Little Blue Towels continue to collect from over 70 hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne, Country Victoria, and the ACT.

All profits from the sale of the Little Blue Towels go to The OTIS Foundation - Breast Cancer Retreats which provide retreat accommodation at no cost to anyone dealing with the challenges of breast cancer. The OTIS Foundation have properties in every state of Australia. Each stay provides guests time to relax, reconnect and regroup. Friends, family, and partners are also welcome.
