Key Benefits of Remedial Massage

An immediate benefit of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm, this occurs because therapeutic touch prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Some of the physical benefits of massage include:
• Reduced muscle tension, tones and relaxing muscles
• Improved circulation and stimulation of the lymphatic system
• Reduction of stress hormones
• Increase joint mobility and flexibility
• Improved skin tone
• Speed up the body’s own repair mechanisms
• Gives a sense of overall Wellbeing
• A calming effect on the peripheral nervous system which eases pain and discomfort in the body
• Relaxation that allows our minds and bodies to recharge and rejuvenate

It is important to drink plenty of water after the massage to flush metabolic waste from the tissues. Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic touch has shown to increase attention span, memory recall, laughter, relaxation, vitality and social interaction, posture, body awareness and skin colour. Improves blood circulation, relieves pain, increase ROM, and helps maintain and improve overall health and retain certain physical functions. There is a reduction in anxiety and provides comfort. Massage means interaction; there is a physical and emotional effect on your client with a massage. The lack of touch can lead to psychiatric or physical problems, it can lead to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and lethargy, lack of caring touch can result in diminishing quality of life. Qualified Massage Techniques

Swedish massage - uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding, petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping, friction (cross fibre) and vibration/shaking. Deep Tissue Focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue, especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas, the strokes are slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. Trigger Point Therapy involves deactivating trigger points within muscles that may cause local pain or refer pain and other sensations, (such as headaches) in other parts of the body. Manual pressure is applied to these points to relieve myofascial pain. Myofascial Release Therapy - refers to the manual massage technique for stretching the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, integument, and muscles with the goal of eliminating pain, increasing range of motion and equilibrioception. Myofascial release usually involves applying shear compression or tension in various directions or by skin rolling. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage technique used to gently work and stimulate the lymphatic system, to assist in the reduction of localised swelling. Reflexology - based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet that relate to every organ, gland, and system of the body. Passive & Active Stretching - stretching techniques used to gradually increase the range of movement. PNF Stretching - Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation stretching is a combination of passive and isometrics contractions to increase range of movement to improve biomechanics. What is Reiki

Reiki is the name for a Japanese healing method that corrects energy imbalances in the body and is applied through the hands. The result is a deeply relaxing experience which is excellent for stress management and self-healing. Reiki is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life-force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, depression, anxiety and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy, increasing our built-in defences. This can manifest itself as confidence and outward harmony in dealing with everyday events. It can also help you gain a positive outlook on life! When we are relaxed, stress-free, we are able to restore our natural ability to heal.

Happy International Day of Happiness!

Today, March 20th, is a day dedicated to spreading joy, well-being, and compassion. It’s a reminder of the importance of happiness in our lives and the positive impact it has on individuals, communities, and the world at large.

What does happiness mean to you? What brings you Joy? We often find ourselves in the relentless hustle and bustle of life, racing through the days without a moment to single out what brings us genuine happiness and peace.

Take a moment today to spread some happiness and make a commitment to bring more Joy into your life. If you don’t yet have a Joy list, think of at least 10 things that light up your soul with authentic happiness, even if they appear utterly nonsensical to others. The joys that set your heart aglow.

Perform acts of kindness and share positive messages, laughter and smiles.

Be inspired by authors such as Brene Brown and Gretchen Ruben. Visit your local library to find books to inspire joy.

Happiness is a fundamental human right. By fostering happiness and well-being, we can create a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable world for everyone.

March is Endometriosis Awareness month, which aims to increase awareness on a common yet often misunderstood condition affecting nearly 1 million Australian women. This conditio involves tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside it, causing a range of symptoms. It can start from early in the menstrual journey and many suffer from it for many years.

Common Symptoms include:
Pelvic pain during or around periods.
Fatigue.
Painful ovulation, s*x, bowel movements, and urination.
Pelvic, lower back, or leg pain.
Bladder issues.
Heavy or irregular bleeding.
Infertility.

Endometriosis predominantly affects reproductive organs but can manifest in various parts of the body, from bowel and bladder to skin, joints, lungs, and the brain.

Medical treatment often includes surgery, which aims to remove the lesions, usually within the abdominal cavity.

Lara Briden, a naturopathic doctor who specialises in women’s health, suggests an alternative approach. Lara looks at the inflammatory nature of endometriosis as a form of immune dysfunction stating that “it looks and behaves very much like an autoimmune disease”.

According to Lara, there’s a strong link between endometriosis and gut problems and addressing these should be the foundation of any treatment plan. Excluding inflammatory foods like gluten and dairy may be beneficial.

Once gut issues are under control you “can target the immune system with all the supportive anti-inflammatory nutrients and supplements that the immune system loves.” Lara Briden

Endometriosis is multifaceted, requiring a village of health professionals. Acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, physiotherapy, and psychology can play crucial roles.

At Wonderful Wombs, we’ve supported clients with Endometriosis using targeted womb healing massage, offering relief and improvement in symptoms.

Endometriosis is not just a physical ailment; it’s a complex condition that demands understanding, awareness, and a comprehensive approach to support those affected. Reach out for more information on how we can be part of your support team.

Over a century ago, the first International Women’s Day was held in March 1911. Today, we continue to celebrate women every March 8, honoring their achievements and recognizing their essential contributions to the world.

This day is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a call to action. A reminder to celebrate accomplishments and shine a light on the ongoing journey toward equality.
As we embrace the mission of inspiring inclusion, we nurture a sense of belonging, community, and empowerment for women.

True inclusion means embracing diversity in race, age, ability, faith, body image, and identity. It means recognizing that every woman’s story, every woman’s contribution, matters.

Nikita Gill reminds us of the power of women uplifting women: “Fill your life with women that empower you, that help you believe in your magic and aid them to believe in their own exceptional power and their incredible magic too. Women that believe in each other can survive anything. Women who believe in each other create armies that will win kingdoms and wars.”

This International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate, support, and believe in one another. Together, we can create a world where women’s voices are not just heard, but valued, and where empowerment is shared freely.

Who inspires you to believe in your magic?

People often ask me if I have a table with a “pregnancy hole” so that pregnant women can lie on their bellies (suspended in the prone position) during a massage. Although it sounds appealing, this type of table or pillow is only designed for physiotherapists, chiropractors, and osteopaths who may need pregnant clients to lie face down for a maximum of 10-15 minutes, not for an hour-long massage.

Lying face down during pregnancy can negatively impact the body physiologically and functionally, including adding strain to the lumbar, pelvic, and uterine structures, which are already under pressure from the weight of the baby, amniotic fluid, and placenta.

The side-lying or semi-reclined position is a safer, more comfortable option for pregnant women during a massage. Catherine McInerney, Director of Pregnancy Massage Australia, recommends the side-lying position as the safest option for massage during pregnancy. ‘The side-lying position offers many positive physical and psychological benefits for both mum and baby. This position puts the muscles in the lower back into a relaxed position, and gently lengthens the spine, reducing the effects of lower back pain whilst supporting the abdomen. It also reduces strain on uterine ligaments and prevents an increase in sinus pressure.’

The side-lying fetal position is a comfortable and soothing position, similar to the position in which most people sleep, making it calming physically and psychologically. It also allows for easy and safe access to all areas of the body commonly experiencing aches and pains during pregnancy.

As a massage therapist, my primary principle is to “do no harm” and focus on the safety and well-being of the mother and baby. At Wonderful Wombs we believe the side-lying or semi-reclined positions are safer and more comfortable options for pregnant women during a massage.

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month (OCAM) – a time to raise awareness, advocate, and shine a light on Ovarian Cancer, a disease that remains poorly understood by many.

In Australia, over 1,500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. Yet, the symptoms are often vague and can be easily mistaken for other health issues like Menopause or IBS.

Common symptoms include:
* Unusual bloating
* Fatigue
* Lower back pain
* Irregular menstrual bleeding
* Changes in bowel or bladder patterns

Over 70% of ovarian cancer diagnoses are made in the advanced stages after the cancer has spread. “The signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer are often vague or non-specific in the early stages, such as unexplained weight changes and appetite loss. This is one of the key reasons why Ovarian Cancer is mostly diagnosed in the advanced stages (3 and 4), when it is harder to treat effectively.” — Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation

Ovarian cancer is typically diagnosed through a pelvic examination, ultrasound, blood tests, and/or CT scan. Unfortunately, there is no screening test available yet, which is why early detection is so crucial.

Let’s keep raising awareness, supporting those affected, and advocating for better research and early detection.

After childbirth, the focus switches to the baby but new Mums need nurturing support too. Postpartum massage focuses on regeneration, renewal, and release, acknowledging that a mother’s body undergoes rapid changes.

In the journey of bringing new life, a mother’s body must energetically and physically return to a non-pregnant state. Typically, it takes about 6-8 weeks for a woman’s body to regain a semblance of its pre-pregnancy state but the journey to full recovery can extend well beyond those initial weeks.

Some mothers might struggle with issues like hip misalignment, a tailbone injury from delivery, or persistent muscle aches from a demanding labour. These strains associated with labour, nursing, or surgical procedures are a top priority.

Many discomforts of new motherhood can be mediated with massage. Touch helps increase the release of endorphins, rebalance hormones, increase blood flow, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Leslie Stager lists the following benefits of Postpartum massage for both Mum and baby:
* Reduces Muscle Aches
* Improves Posture
* Emotional Support
* Hastens Recovery
* Benefits Breastfeeding
* Benefits Digestion
* Benefits Baby
* Reduces Perineal Discomfort
* Reduces Uterine Prolapse

“Massage for the new mother helps her acclimate to this new life and its demands for adaptation.” - Pregnancy Massage Australia.

Gentle massage can be initiated 24 hours after delivery, assuming that there have been no complications during delivery or afterward. However many women prefer to wait longer before receiving bodywork. This will depend on each individual and we are happy to work with you to determine the appropriate time to begin the post partum massage work. For those who have given birth via a c-section it is recommended to wait 6 weeks before receiving a massage.

Navigating the third trimester brings many joyful moments but also challenges. As your baby gets ready to make their entrance, you might find yourself struggling with a few complaints such as shortness of breath, back pain, pelvic heaviness, ankle edema, and various other discomforts.

Around 36 weeks, your baby might descend into the pelvis, a process known as “lightening,” potentially giving you some relief from breathing difficulties. However, the pressure on your bladder might increase, with more trips to the bathroom. Changes in blood composition might make you feel a bit dizzy or fatigued. Nights could become restless as you wake to urinate, process dreams, or simply find a more comfy position. The body’s preparation for birth can result in pelvic joint looseness, and you might even experience Braxton-Hicks contractions.

As you approach the final stretch, the extra weight might leave you eager for labour to begin. To ease these discomforts, we can provide relaxation massage for specific muscle groups in a comfy side-lying or semi-reclined position, mindful of varicose veins and thrombosis precautions. Belly rubs can be enjoyed in low-risk pregnancies and gentle pelvic tilts to lengthen the lower back can bring relief. If heartburn is bothering you, we’ll use the semi-reclining position to accommodate your discomfort.

Labour preparation massages can prepare you for the big day. We’ll guide you through perineal massage methods and teach your partner some massage techniques to support you during labour.

Remember, nurturing touch not only nurtures your body but also enhances your connection with your baby. As Leslie Stager wisely says, “Nurturing touch helps her deal with the sensations of labour, and enjoy her birth and postpartum experiences more readily. If she can associate touch with relaxation before birth begins, then during birth, her body will automatically remember that relaxation cue when she is touched.”

A relaxing pregnancy massage can pave the way for a beautiful birth and postpartum journey.

Embracing the Second Trimester ✨
(Weeks 14–27)

The second trimester is often a time of renewed energy and exciting changes. Your baby’s growth accelerates — now measuring around 15–23 cm — and the placenta takes on a vital role in nourishing and protecting your baby.

Many women notice a deeper bond with their baby, fewer mood swings, and even a welcome boost in energy and libido.
As your belly grows, your centre of gravity shifts and your body adapts.

Thoughtful postural support can help ease:
• Leg and foot cramps
• Upper spine tension
• Lower back discomfort
• Abdominal muscle stretching

Leslie Stager, author of Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy, tells us that massage during this stage can:
✨ Relieve round ligament pain, hip discomfort, and common pregnancy aches
✨ Create balance by incorporating side-lying and belly support, fostering a sense of wholeness
✨ Deepen your connection with your baby, offering comfort and reassurance to you both
✨ Support emotional calm and prepare your body and mind for birth

Regular massage can also improve joint and muscle function, reduce stress, and enhance circulation — helping to ease swelling, varicose veins, muscle spasms, and foot numbness. It supports placental function and boosts prolactin, the hormone essential for milk production and nurturing instincts.

During your session, we’ll gently guide you through:
• Abdominal, perineal, and back-strengthening exercises
• Deep belly breathing to enhance oxygenation and nourish your baby

We understand that for some, pregnancy can bring complex emotions — especially with challenging medical histories. If feelings of ambivalence arise, know that you’re not alone.

Our nurturing touch and support are here to help you feel held, supported, and more at ease as you step into motherhood.

✨ Have questions about pregnancy massage?
We’d love to hear from you — feel free to reach out anytime.

The first trimester, the magical period of 0-13 weeks from the first day of your last period, marks the beginning of an incredible journey of development and growth for your little one!

During this precious time, your baby sprouts to around 8-9cm and embarks on a journey of forming vital organs, a brilliant brain, a delicate spine, those adorable arms and legs, dainty nails, and those oh-so-cute ears. By day 26 the heartbeat can be detected.

But let’s not forget about you, Mama! Hormonal changes start playing a part in your body’s beautiful transformation. At around 10 weeks, the hormone relaxin steps in, guiding your joints. Your blood volume increases and your heart races a bit faster. You might encounter some fatigue, queasy mornings, and bathroom trips like never before!

“All of the Mother’s vital energies shift at once to support and nurture the growing embryo with increased blood, oxygen and nutrients…. A woman’s wellbeing should be protected carefully.” Leslie Stager, Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy

In this trimester, it’s advisable to avoid lengthy water immersions, alcohol consumption, and activities that could potentially disrupt your baby’s delicate nervous system development. Some women may also choose to skip bodywork treatments due to heightened early pregnancy concerns.

Yet, your well-being remains a priority for us. Throughout the first trimester, we work with many women, offering support for the physical and emotional changes that come with it. Our approach involves gentle adjustments to ease discomfort, tenderness, and nausea, all while avoiding any overpowering scents. Although deep abdominal and sacral work is not recommended, our nurturing massages will guide you through this beautiful phase of transition.

Remember, you’re never alone on this journey, and we’re here to ensure it’s as beautiful as you’ve always imagined. Don’t hesitate to connect with us for any queries or concerns about pregnancy massage – we’re here to support you.

28/12/2025

As we approach the end of the year, it’s a beautiful time to pause and reflect on the last twelve months.

It’s natural for our minds to drift toward what didn’t go as planned — the challenges faced or the goals left unmet. But don’t forget to also gather the moments of joy: the times you felt peace, alignment, or a quiet sense that the universe was supporting you.

Take a moment to recognize and appreciate your blessings. What are you truly grateful for this year?

Science shows that practicing gratitude boosts happiness and overall health, reduces stress, and lifts your energy. Gratitude doesn’t just change how you feel — it changes how you experience life.

And for the moments that challenged you, acknowledge the lessons they carried. In life’s ebb and flow, every experience can become a stepping stone for growth. Honour the courage it took to face difficulties and the resilience that emerged from within.

“Focus on what’s working in your life, the positive stuff. For what you focus on and think about most is what manifests in your life.” — Dr Christiane Northrup

As we step into a new year, ask yourself:
✨ What wisdom will you carry forward?
✨ What rituals will you deepen or amplify?
✨ What new habits will you explore to nurture your mind, body, and soul?

Your journey is ongoing, and this next chapter is yours to write — with intention, mindfulness, self-love, and a renewed commitment to your well-being.

I’d love to hear your reflections and intentions for the year ahead. Let’s inspire one another as we continue this journey of health, happiness, and growth
