Urgent care for summer setbacks

Unexpected injuries and illnesses can be a serious setback to holiday and travel plans.
If you have something that can’t wait for a regular GP appointment but doesn’t need a trip to the hospital, that’s a case for a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic.

Urgent care is when you have an illness or injury that needs medical attention the same day but isn’t life-threatening.

Things that may need urgent medical care include minor fractures, sprains; minor infections; mild burns; respiratory illness; severe stomach pains; or urinary tract infections.

Severe heatwave and extreme fire danger warnings are in place for later this week.

While extreme heat can affect anyone, people who are young, older, who are pregnant, have acute or chronic health problems, are socially isolated or have limited ways to keep cool are more at risk.

Tips to protect yourself and others:
💦 Stay cool. Use air conditioning and/or a fan. Wear light and loose clothing. Keep skin wet, using a spray bottle or damp sponge and by taking cool showers. If you can’t keep cool at home, think about where you can go on hot days to cool down such as public pools or air-conditioned buildings.
🫗 Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Keep drinking fluids before you feel thirsty, especially if outdoors and performing physical activity.
☎️ Check in with family, friends and neighbours. Let people know you are OK and check in with those at increased risk or who may need your support. Look out for those who might be more affected by extreme heat.
📆 Plan ahead. Watch the weather forecast and plan activities at cooler times of day.
🚫 Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

Summer is a peak time for outdoor fun. Whether you’re kicking goals, kicking up dust or kicking back by the pool, it’s also a time of year when more people have accidents or become ill.

If you have an illness or injury that can’t wait for a GP appointment but isn’t life-threatening, that’s a case for a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic.

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics provide bulk billed, walk-in care for urgent but not life-threatening health conditions like sprains, fractures, cuts, burns, illnesses, and infections.

Strengthening Community Connections in Medicare Urgent Care!

The Dandenong Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (MUCC) recently hosted a community engagement meeting and Urgeht care clinic tour with local community leaders and representatives.

We were pleased to welcome Rob Koch Senior Advisor – Community Engagement, Monash Health, and Julie Raciti -Community Hub Leader, along with valued community representatives.

The session was led by Dr Hamid Fairoos (Clinical Lead) together with Riekie Jooste (Operations Manager), Fariha Khan (Practice Manager), Erin Roger (Nurse Manager), and members of our Urgent Care team.

🩺 Key discussions included:

• How urgent care supports both Medicare and non-Medicare patients
• The critical role of urgent care in refugee health and supporting asylum seekers, including access even without Medicare
• Educating community leaders on how to contact, access, and navigate urgent care services

🤝 The meeting was highly productive and focused on improving awareness, access, and collaboration.

Proud to work together in supporting our community.

Today, the Bone Bus visited our clinic to provide convenient Bone Density (DEXA) scans for our community.

Osteoporosis is a silent condition, often undetected until a fracture occurs, early screening is crucial.

✅ Who should consider a scan?
• Women 50+ / post-menopause
• Men 70+
• Previous low-impact fractures
• Long-term steroid use
• Family history of osteoporosis

Early detection helps prevent fractures, guide treatment, and protect long-term mobility.

Proud to bring accessible healthcare closer to our community. 💙
