As a doula I recommend all my clients (that plan to breastfeed) do some breastfeeding education while they are pregnant! The benefits of understanding this skill before their baby arrives are huge.
Do you know:
🥛 what a good latch looks and feels like?
🥛 how to tell if your baby is getting enough?
🥛 what happens when your milk comes in?
🥛 what cluster feeding is and how to navigate it
🥛 common issues in the early days and how to deal with them
🥛 how to access extra support
Hospitals run courses, there are online options, you could have a private session with a lactation consultant or you could take a group class with a lactation consultant.

In Sydney, we have 2 amazing IBCLCs who offer small group, in person courses and I rate them incredibly highly.

Check out their course dates and book in with them if you can. It’s the best investment you can make in your feeding journey.

Doulas aren’t the problem!
There’s been a lot of talk about legislating doula support in the Australian media recently. I don’t think this will have the intended effect of keeping women and babies safer. Instead I see it reducing the number of doulas. And those that are working outside of their scope? It won’t change their behaviour but it may well push them more into the margins.

Governments would do better to consider why many women choose to free birth. For the majority it’s because the services they want are not available or they’re scared to give birth in their local hospital due to previous trauma. How about fixing those issues?

No kidding, I use this item ALL the time! It’s a neoprene kneeling pad and it gets pulled out at almost every birth I support. Now at Kmart for $12!!
So if you’re al doula or an expectant family I strongly recommend bringing one to your birth.

Why is it used so often?
❗️it supports active birth positions
❗️is supportive, dense and comfortable
❗️it’s light and easy to slip under a labouring woman
❗️it’s perfect for using in bathrooms as it dries quickly, won’t block any drains
❗️fits easily into small spaces where a larger floor mat isn’t suitable

Things I’m taking to hospital with me that I also recommend to my clients! Because recovery is recovery….
• bone broth & arnica
• water bottle & .co hydration drinks
• peppermint tea for trapped gas in my system
• heat pack
• dried pears
• sweet & savoury congee

Doulas are not there because you can't cope, we remind you that you can. Birth is a lot, it's supposed to be, but it's not bigger than you.
We reassure you, help you feel calm in the storm of labour. We guide your partner towards being the best loving support they can be. We're there for all of it, we're there for you.
