Being aware of your mind means being conscious of your thoughts and present to what your thinking!! Often we 'rabbit-on' in our minds with negative self talk; criticism, put downs and abuse and we do it so often that we don't even realise that we are doing it. When you catch yourself berating yourself, stop, pause and softly say 'Shhhh".
Take a breath and think of yourself as your friend. Say something soothing like, "oh I'm doing my old habit again, that's okay. I'm learning how to be kind to myself. I'm still learning", and that's okay.
Be aware of your beliefs. Every time you use the word 'should', that's telling you that whatever follows is a belief and a judgement. Then ask yourself is it really true? It may have been true once or maybe it was true for your mother or father but is it true now for you? Maybe it is but maybe it isn't. It's certainly worth checking, it's certainly worth being aware.
