The last year has been full of challenges for the Wells-Smith Family; running two businesses and having a small family with two children under 3!

To help Sarah and I balance work and family life we are excited to announce that as of 1st July 2022 Kilmore Equine Clinic has merged into Motion Equine Centre!

We will continue to perform routine and emergency veterinary care for the community from dentals to vaccinations to castrations and wound management.

Our clients will now come under the Motion Equine Centre banner and have access to more streamlined quality services from our two talented and experienced vets Dr Luke Wells-Smith and Dr Anushka von Oppen.

To learn more visit www.motion-equine.com.au and to keep 'following' us head over to .

We are very much looking forward to the rest of 2022 and sharing this exciting new chapter with our KEC and MEC communities.

Kind regards,
Dr Luke Wells-Smith

The old adage "Straight from the horse's mouth" may seem more meaningful when you consider that a licensed practitioner can learn so much about an animal's health by examining its mouth.

Routine examination by an experienced, licensed veterinarian will help detect dental disease and other health problems early—before they threaten the well-being of your horse.

Call us to discuss a dental examination for your horse—and prevent more painful and costly problems later!

An oral exam should be an essential part of an annual examination by a veterinarian. Every dental exam provides the opportunity to perform routine preventative dental care as well. The end result is a healthier, more comfortable horse.

Beyond the comfort and good health of your horse, there are other benefits to proper dental care. Your horse will consume feed more efficiently with less spillage or waste and may perform better and live longer.

Our Healthcare Wellness plan includes a yearly dental exam and health check, along with a vaccination, blood test and 4 x faecal egg counts. To find out more visit https://www.kilmoreequine.com.au/health-plans

Its that time of the year again to think about worming your horse with a boticide!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀?
The yellow/orange eggs laid by bot flies are commonly seen on the hair of the inner legs and knees of horses. When the horse licks or bites at these areas they ingest these eggs. The larvae hatch out of the eggs and can stay embedded in the mucosa of the tongue or mouth for approximately one month. After this time they will pass to the stomach. Once in the stomach they attach themselves to the stomach lining using ‘oral hooks’ (commonly they are found in the region of the margo plicatus) and remain there for a further 8 to 10 months before being passed out in the manure to complete their lifecycle.

A heavy burden of bots can cause erosive and ulcerative lesions causing mild gastritis, however in the majority of cases they don’t cause any problems.

A good worming program is important to prevent a large infestation, and this parasite is usually targeted in spring and autumn treatments. In addition, eggs can be safely removed from the hair with a grooming tool called a bot knife. Cleaning up manure and regular application of fly repellent will also help reduce the chances of a heavy infestation.

Dr. Amanda has recently returned from a 6-day intensive dental course up in Grafton, NSW to expand her dental skill set and we are glad to have her back!

Did you know that a juvenile horse should have a dental examination when it is foaled, at three months and every six months until age five? For healthy adult horses a yearly dental examination is recommended. Horses older than 20 or with a history of dental problems should return to a twice yearly schedule.

Call us at Kilmore Equine Clinic today (03) 5781 0163 to schedule a dental examination for your horse—and prevent more painful and costly problems later!

Did you know that the prevalence of gastric squamous ulceration in sport and pleasure horses is up to 59%?

Gastroscopy is an important part of evaluating the health of your horse and allows us to provide targeted treatment, and assess how your horse has responded to therapy.

Don’t forget KEC has its own gastroscope and appointments to check your horse’s stomach health can be made at any time. We also provide a report with images and recommendations on how best to manage your horse’s gut health.

Ulcers are graded on a scale from 0-4, assessing the severity based upon the size, number and depth of ulceration. This horse has grade 2 gastric ulceration, with small multifocal and superficial ulcers.

Recently, our veterinarians at KEC have been trialling a new formulation of omeprazole for the management of stomach ulcers. This formulation is in a granule form (no more pastes!) and can be added to feed. It has been shown to be effective against not only squamous ulcers but also pyloric and small intestinal ulcers which can be very tricky to manage.

This week has been particularly hard saying goodbye to three very loved patients. It is a difficult part of our job but we are grateful to be there to support their families.
If you are lucky enough to spend time with your equine buddy this weekend, give them an extra carrot or extra hugs because horses truly are our best friends 🥰 🦄 🥕 ❤️ 🌈
