Habits: The Real Marathon 🧠
This weekend, I ran the Melbourne Marathon — and it reminded me of something I talk about often in therapy: lasting change isn’t about motivation, it’s about habits.
🧠What is a habit?
A habit is a behaviour that is automatic. It has been repeated enough times to become automatic. Forming habits creates discipline and with that, long lasting change.
✍️Why are habits important?
Every small, consistent action — from showing up for a run on a cold morning, to making healthier food choices when you are stressed — it brings you 1% closer to who you want to become. Over time, these small actions shape how you think, feel, and live.
As James Clear states in his bestselling book, Atomic Habits- “You can choose the identity you want to reinforce today with the habits you choose today”
If you’re working on building healthier habits, remember:
✨ Consistency beats intensity.
✨ Progress matters more than perfection.
✨ Change happens slowly — until it suddenly doesn’t.
✨Progress is non-linear: expect ebbs and flows
Motivation gets you to the start line. Habits get you to the finish line💛
