Skill development in action 👩‍⚕️✨

Today our surgical team supported Taylor as she placed her first urinary catheter—a delicate procedure requiring precision, sterility and a solid understanding of urinary anatomy.

Urinary catheters play an important role in specialist surgery and critical care, allowing us to accurately monitor urine output, maintain bladder drainage during anaesthesia, and support patients with urinary obstruction or mobility limitations.

Proud of you, Tay!!

🧡 Meet Lucas 🧡

We recently received this incredibly heartfelt message from Lucas’ family after he came to Southpaws emergency department with a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding. At almost 14 years old, the odds were against him — but his family acted fast, and our Emergency and Surgery teams were able to perform life-saving surgery.

Lucas spent three nights with us, winning over every vet, nurse, and receptionist along the way. We were honoured to care for him and to support his family through such a frightening time. 💙

Stories like Lucas’ remind us why we do what we do.

Welcome home, brave boy. Thank you to his family for these kind words. Wishing Lucas a gentle and comfortable recovery. 🐾💛

🐈 Meet Archie! 🐈

A charming Maine C**n who recently visited Southpaws for a thorough check-up with Dr Benjamin Kaye. Archie's family noticed an unusual clicking noise in his thoracic limbs, particularly when walking on soft surfaces—but thankfully, he showed no signs of pain, lameness, or discomfort. After comprehensive physical and orthopaedic examinations, Archie was found to be in excellent health, with no structural concerns detected.

We’re always here to support your pets through the unknown and ensure peace of mind. To help pet owners make informed decisions, Southpaws offers free surgical consults through our surgery department—so you can get expert advice without the worry. Whether you’re a pet parent or a referring vet, your questions are always welcome! 🤝

🌟 Bu's TPLO Journey 🌟

Bu originally had a TPLO performed four years ago outside of Southpaws. Unfortunately he had ongoing complications and never recovered as his family expected. In August this year his dedicated family brought him in to see Dr James Simcock at the Southpaws Mornington location and he performed a TPLO revision surgery.

He recently visited us for his 8-week post op check and these were his results:

🌟 Healing beautifully post-revision
🌟 Wound fully healed
🌟 No pain on range of motion
🌟 Walking with 0/5 lameness
🌟 And looking very stylish in his PJs through it all 💙

We’re so happy with Bu’s progress grateful to his family for trusting us with his care. We couldn't be happier to hear that he is doing so much better than before his surgeries. 😍

Keep strutting those PJs, Bu! 🐾

✨ Grateful beyond words ✨

We’re so touched by this beautiful feedback about Nelson’s journey. After being hit by a car, Nelson came to Southpaws for emergency care — and thanks to the dedication of our team, he has made a great recovery! Special shout out to Dr Merianna Foo, Dr Shaun Toh and the entire Malvern team!

So happy to hear he is back to his cheeky, happy self!! Thank you for trusting us during such a frightening time. ❤️🐾

✨ Behind the Scenes at Southpaws: Morning Rounds ✨

Every morning, our hospital comes together for one of the most important parts of the day: rounds.

This is when our specialist anaesthetists, emergency team, surgery department, nursing and reception teams, and coordinators meet to hand over overnight patients and plan the day’s cases before they arrive.

During this time (8:00–8:30am), our reception team may let you know that the clinicians are currently in rounds. This isn’t a delay — it’s an essential part of ensuring every patient is reviewed, every plan is clear, and nothing is missed between the day and night teams.

Morning rounds are the backbone of how we deliver safe, seamless, high-level care. Your pets aren’t just handed over — they’re team-managed, with multiple specialists and multiple departments collaborating to make sure they get exactly what they need.

Thank you for your understanding while our team comes together each morning to provide the best care possible for the furry members of your family ✨✨

✨ Thank you for the love! ✨

We’re so grateful for this beautiful review and even more grateful to have cared for Prince during his emergency surgery.

Prince came to Southpaws Malvern in early November for an emergency exploratory laparotomy to remove a foreign body — and we’re so happy to share that he’s recovered beautifully.

From assessment to surgery to follow-up, our Malvern team is dedicated to making every step as clear, supportive and stress-free as possible — for both you and your pet.

Thank you for trusting us…
and thank you to Prince for the biscuits 🐾💙
