A sad day for the running world. Jeff Galloway has been a huge inspiration to me throughout my running and coaching journey. ‘Jeffing’ features daily in my clinic discussions and his deep water running demonstration is still the best! Thank you Jeff, for everything you have done for the global running community. RIP🤍

I am often asked about the efficacy of cold plunging (particularly by female runners who wonder if it is worth suffering through!) This is an excellent article by Dr. Stacy Sims explaining the do’s, don’t’s and why’s of cold therapy for women…. In short, it can be useful, but colder is not necessarily better!

Cold plunging has exploded in popularity, with everyone from elite athletes to wellness influencers posting their ice bath rituals. But long before it hit social media, cold-water immersion was a Nordic tradition—often paired with saunas—as a way to build resilience, reset the mind, and connect socially. Those plunges weren’t just about recovery; they were about ritual, renewal, and community.

Fast forward to today, and you’ve probably seen the claims: “Go as cold as possible for maximum benefit.” But as is so often the case in exercise and recovery science, what works for men doesn’t always work the same way for women.

When I see women shivering in tubs of icy-cold water at 4°C (39°F) because they’ve been told it will boost metabolism, burn fat, or supercharge recovery, I want to jump in (literally) and explain: you don’t need to go that cold—and in many cases, it’s counterproductive.

Let’s unpack what’s really happening physiologically, how cold exposure can support both health and performance, and why for women, the sweet spot often sits around 15°C (59°F)—not ice-cold extremes.

This is pretty exciting! 😀

We did it, Sydney! We are beyond thrilled to announce that, thanks to YOU, the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS is now the 7th member of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors – a historic moment for Australian sport!

This achievement is about every single one of you. Big or small, first-timers or marathon veterans, every step you took played a part in putting Sydney on the world stage. Your stories – the triumphs, the struggles, the grit, and the spirit – have shown the world what it means to be a runner in Sydney. And today, we celebrate YOU for this accomplishment.

Together, we have forged a new chapter in Australian sports history. As the world watches, they’ll see what we already know: that our marathon is more than a race; it’s a movement built by the dedication and passion of a community that believes in each other and inspires the next generation to take their first steps.

To every runner, volunteer, cheer squad, and supporter – thank you for bringing us here. Thank you for your strength, your stories, and your support. The finish line was only the beginning; as a Major, we’re setting our sights even higher.

Let’s continue to make history, one stride at a time.

Here’s to our legacy that will inspire runners for years to come.

With Love,
The TCS Sydney Marathon Team
