Setting Up for Success—Why Don’t We Offer Kids the Same?
Before we settle into work, we often set ourselves up for success. We grab a coffee, fill up a water bottle, maybe even have a snack nearby. Some of us put on calming music, others need total silence. We clear our workspace, make to-do lists, and give ourselves time to plan before diving into tasks.
Now, think about what we expect from kids in the classroom.
• Noisy environments
• Cluttered or shared desks
• Limited movement breaks
• Little to no say in their setup
• Jumping straight into tasks without preparation
We recognise what we need to focus, stay regulated, and do our best work—so why do we expect developing brains to function well under far less ideal conditions?
What if we gave kids more of what we know works for us? Flexible seating, sensory breaks, access to water and snacks, quiet spaces, time to plan and transition. Small changes can make a big difference in how kids engage, learn, and thrive.
What’s one thing that helps you stay focused at work? Let’s start thinking about how we can offer the same to our kids!
