This week, marks the 50th anniversary of Ivan Butler opening his funeral home, and conducting the first funeral for Ivan Butler Funerals.

Proudly owned and operated by the Butler family, we are now into the third generation. Following Michael’s transition to retirement, his son Thomas has taken on the role of Managing Director.

Since that first funeral, Ivan Butler Funerals has looked after thousands of families from all over South Australia, Australia, and even worldwide, with dignity, empathy, respect and professionalism.

We have an amazing team of staff, with Thomas, Dean, Karina, Allie and myself, supported by a number of others who assist part time as needed. This includes Lindsay and Dianne, who have both worked for the company on and off since the very beginning (Lindsay helped Ivan on Funeral number 1, on 27 June 1975, and following her retirement in 2017 after around 25 years as our Office Manager, if you have need to phone us during the week after hours, chances are Dianne will answer the phone).

Our current staff collectively have almost 100 years experience in the funeral industry between then, which I believe demonstrates dedication to a very special role. We have a strong record of a low staff turnover. In fact, in our 50 years, we have only had roughly 15 full time Funeral Directors.

On behalf of Michael, Rachel, Thomas and William Butler, and our team, I wish to express our gratitude to our industry colleagues and suppliers for their support to this point, and ongoing into the future.

But most importantly we say thank you to all of those families, who have entrusted us to care for their loved ones, while offering you support during difficult times, to the best of our abilities.

Here’s to the next 50 years!

Christmas is a time for sharing with family and friends. For many, it can be a difficult time. Through sadness and grief, may you find some comfort in the memories of loved ones no longer with you. Peace and good wishes to all.

With Christmas just around the corner, and the festive season in full swing, it’s important to remember that amongst all of the joy and happiness, many experience grief and sadness from the death of a loved one, no longer being physically present to celebrate with them.

I’m sure several churches and organisations hold special services, to provide an opportunity to reflect and remember.

Gully Church is one such place, holding a Peace Service at 7:15pm on Tuesday 17 December, where all are welcome.

If you’re heading in to the VAILO Adelaide 500 this weekend, be sure to swing by the Custom Vehicle display, where you’ll find our BUTLER1 Holden Calais Hearse.

We’re very proud of this vehicle, which was once a Calais sedan that we have owned from new, and subsequently had converted to the hearse that it now is.
