If you are taking paracetamol for osteoarthritis or other forms of pain, such as headaches, period pain or muscle pain, do not take a cold and flu medicine that contains paracetamol at the same time.

Paracetamol is safe and effective when taken as directed. However, it can be easy—and dangerous—to take more than the recommended dose.

Paracetamol is found in many cold and flu products including some cough medicines and dissolvable sachets, and is sold under a variety of brand names.

The recommended dose for adults and children 12 years and over is no more than 1g every 4-6 hours to a total of 4g daily. The maximum dose for children is dependent on their body weight.

If an overdose occurs, you should contact the Poisons Information Centre on 131 126 or go to a hospital as soon as possible.
