As we edge toward Christmas, the Australian recruitment landscape shifts gears, and the data paints a very real, very human picture of how stretched our workforce truly is.

In healthcare, dental and allied health, vacancy rates remain up to 25% higher than pre-pandemic averages. Across regional Australia, temp and locum demand has surged 30-40%, and many clinics are running with 15-20% fewer staff than they ideally need. It’s no wonder December becomes one of the most operationally challenging months of the year.

Candidate response times slow by up to 40% as people juggle burnout, school holidays, and year-end pressures; yet expectations to “fill the role today” only increase.

We also see a sharp behavioural trend. While applications drop by around 18% in December, nearly half of all Australian jobseekers begin planning their next move between November and February. The “new year, new role” wave is very real, and smart recruitment agencies are right in it now.

To every recruiter, candidate, client, and clinic we support, thank you. Let’s finish the year strong, take a breath over the break, and get ready for a big 2026.

Wonderful as always to catch up with friend and mentor, renowned High Performance Recruitment Coach Ross Clennett, FRCSA, at the NPAworldwide PowerUp Australia/New Zealand Conference in Sydney.

The agenda addressed industry-relevant themes revolving around AI, and Ross spoke on “How the Key Human Skills Will Advantage Agency Recruiters in the Age of GenA.”

Business to me is the ultimate 'Chip & Chase'.

There’s a unique feeling that only a few moments in life can match.

For our Union & League followers, you’ll know the rush of seeing someone chip, chase, regather and score (preferably from the Wallabies or Roosters!😀). That split second of disbelief turns into pure exhilaration.

In recruitment, I get that same feeling when a candidate we’ve worked with lands the role that changes everything. The call where you hear the mix of relief, pride, and excitement in their voice.

That’s our version of a try.

Both moments are built on trust, timing, teamwork, and belief. You back yourself, you back your team, and when it all comes together - it’s electric.

To anyone wanting to know, here's what really matters in recruitment today.

Recruitment is about people first, followed by paperwork.

For years, many job ads started with the same checklist: Degree Required, X Years’ Experience Essential.

Lately, we’ve seen a real shift in how we hire, and I welcome it.

Across healthcare and beyond, employers are realising that skills, attitude and adaptability often outweigh formal qualifications (role dependant obviously). A great dental assistant, nurse or practice manager doesn’t just bring a certificate, they bring calm under pressure, empathy, precision, and reliability.

You can’t always measure that on a transcript. Because capability grows through opportunity, not just academia.

As recruiters, we have a responsibility to champion this change, to help employers see potential in people who might not tick every traditional box, but who will absolutely shine once given the chance.

Skills may open doors, but it's mindset that keeps them open.
