It can be argued that long term follow up is just as important as the operation itself. Weight loss management after all is a life-long commitment.

An analogy would be if you were to buy buy a manual car but then did not stick around to learn how to efficiently run through the gears, your car is never going to run as fast as it should.

Robotic surgery is one of the greatest innovations in medicine within the last two decades. With new technology, brings fresh opportunities in how we perform our operations. With it also, comes new challenges and questions.

Unfortunately gallstone formation can happen to 10% of patients who undergo weight loss surgery. It is reasonably common!

Gallstones can form after rapid weight loss due to changes in how the body processes cholesterol and bile.

Here's why it happens:
-> Rapid weight loss causes an imbalance of cholesterol and bile salts that leads to crystalization

-> Reduced Gallbladder Emptying - When you're eating much less, the gallbladder contracts less and there is more stasis which promotes stone formation

-> Imbalance in Bile Composition - Weight loss can disrupt the balance of substances in bile, increasing the risk of solid particles forming.
