A five-year-old boy lost his life on Sunday morning after his arm became trapped in a conveyor-belt ski lift at a resort in Otaru, Hokkaido. Local firefighters received an emergency call from the boy’s mother at approximately 10:00 a.m., reporting that the child was caught in the machinery.

According to police, the boy fell while attempting to disembark from the lift, which connects the parking lot to the ski slopes and notably lacks handrails. Witnesses at the scene described a somber environment as emergency responders worked behind blue tarps, though the resort remained open following the tragedy. Frequent visitors to the facility have raised concerns about the lift's safety, noting that the belt often shakes at points where the slope changes.
